Yuba City, California
Getting help for your cat in Yuba City
Sacramento Valley summers in Yuba City are long and hot, often reaching the high 90s and above, while winters bring cool, damp days and thick valley fog. In summer, keep your pet's body inside with the air conditioning on until collection; in fog season, allow extra time for a provider to arrive from out of town. Either way, you have time for a proper goodbye.
The Sutter Buttes, a ring of volcanic peaks rising from the flat valley floor, are visible from almost everywhere in Yuba City, and many families here watch them change with the seasons from their back porches. Pets often shared that view and that slow valley rhythm. Remembering them can mean remembering evenings outside as the Buttes turned purple at dusk.
In a smaller place like Yuba City, cat cremation is usually arranged through the local vet, who sends pets to a crematory in a larger centre, often somewhere around Sacramento. That's why the ashes can take a little longer to come back and why pickup may happen on set days of the week. For a cat, the wait tends to be short, because small pets are easy to transport and are often returned by mail or via the clinic.
Yuba City is home to about 69,485 people, the 119th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Sacramento, about 39 miles (62 km) away, which is where some providers serving Yuba City are based.
Our pages for Oroville (26 miles), Lincoln (26 miles) and Rocklin (31 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Yuba City as well.
Our estimate
11,000
How many cat-owning households Yuba City has (estimate)
How we calculated this
69,485 ÷ 2.5 = 27,794 households; × 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
11,000 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 970 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation in California, and what it means for cat owners
With about 70.5%[3] of people in California choosing cremation, you'll rarely need to explain your decision. It also shapes what's on offer. Providers in high-cremation areas often stock small urns sized for cats, keepsake lockets and whisker or fur vials, because families ask for them. Look at the full range before you choose; with so little ash, even a tiny keepsake box will do.

What the seasons mean for cat owners in Yuba City
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Yuba City where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What cat cremation costs in Yuba City
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 970 cats lost in Yuba City each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0.2 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

What's allowed in California after your cat dies
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Yuba City.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Yuba City may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do when your cat dies in Yuba City
- If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Yuba City. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.
Keeping your cat close
Yuba City sits across the Feather River from Marysville in the middle of the Sacramento Valley, with older neighborhoods near downtown, newer subdivisions to the west and south, and orchard homes on the rural roads around town. If you live out among the peach or walnut orchards, a clear description of your road and gate helps a provider find you, especially after dark when rural addresses are hard to read.

Questions people ask
Is Yuba City big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 11,000 Yuba City households keep a cat and around 970 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 69,485), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Yuba City?
Usually yes. Oroville is about 26 miles away, Lincoln is about 26 miles away and Rocklin is about 31 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Yuba City actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Sacramento, about 39 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Yuba City and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[3]. We show it on the Yuba City page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in California?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within California, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Yuba City?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[8]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Sacramento, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
