Lincoln, California
Getting help for your cat in Lincoln
Lincoln is one of the fastest-growing cities in western Placer County, about 23 miles from Sacramento. A small historic downtown with old brick buildings is now ringed by newer subdivisions, large active-adult communities and ranchettes on the edge of the foothills. Most pets live in single-family homes with yards; if you are on acreage outside town, include directions and gate details when you ask for options.
Lincoln summers are hot and dry, with July highs around 94F, and winter nights can drop into the low 40s. If your pet dies on a hot afternoon, move them indoors to the coolest room, lay them on a towel and set ice packs near the body. A closed garage or car heats up quickly in the Sacramento Valley sun, so avoid those while you wait.
Barn cats and farm cats are part of life around Lincoln, and many families care for several at once. When one dies, a quiet burial on the land is the usual choice, and a perfectly good one. If a particular cat was closer to you than the others, though, a private cremation lets you keep them, and communal cremation through your vet is an affordable option for cats you fed but never handled.
Lincoln's population is around 57,367, the 149th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Sacramento, about 23 miles (37 km) away, which is where some providers serving Lincoln are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Rocklin (5 miles), Roseville (8 miles, a larger centre) and Citrus Heights (12 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
8,950
Estimated cat-owning households in Lincoln
How we calculated this
57,367 ÷ 2.5 = 22,947 households; × 39% (cat) = 8,950. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
800
Estimated cat losses in Lincoln each year
How we calculated this
8,950 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 800 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in California, and what it means for cat owners
When cremation is as routine as it is in California (roughly 70.5%[3] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Lincoln tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Lincoln weather and timing
Flies are the hidden problem in Lincoln's warm months, especially around July. Keep your cat inside, in a box with a lid or a towel tucked firmly around them, and close windows in that room. It's not about hygiene rules; it's about keeping the goodbye the way you want to remember it. If collection is more than a few hours away, ask your vet to hold your cat in their cold room.
Don't leave your cat in a car or on a porch in Lincoln's summer heat, even for a short while. If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, cool the car first, put your cat in a carrier or lined box on the floor behind a seat, out of the sun, and go straight there. Most clinics will meet you at the door if you call ahead.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
One pet-care company estimates that over a lifetime a cat costs a US household about $32,170[5], so the cremation is a small line in a long story. Even so, it's the one bill you pay while grieving, which is why it helps to know the numbers first. In Lincoln, private cremation, collection and a simple container usually add up to a few hundred dollars at most; the table shows the typical pieces.
Put another way: around 800 cats die in Lincoln each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.1 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

Burial, ashes and the rules in California
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what California says about burial and scattering.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Lincoln may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: covered with a towel in a lidded box in the coolest part of the house, or taken to the nearest vet if the house will be warm.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email to hold your cat until you're home. Most clinics near Lincoln will accept a cat from a sitter if you call ahead.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. The clinic can keep them for several days if that's your wish; when you're a long way from home, a photograph taken by the vet may be a kinder option.
- Arrange the cremation remotely when coming home isn't possible yet. You can give instructions and pay over the phone, and the clinic will keep the ashes until you return.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. Older cats sometimes decline fast, and a sitter who called for help did the right thing.
Remembering your cat, in Lincoln and beyond
Many Lincoln residents are retirees who moved here for the quieter pace, and for them a cat, bird or small pet is often daily companionship. Families with young children live in the newer neighborhoods too. Whatever the household, many people here want a memorial they can see every day, like a spot in the garden or a small urn on a sunny windowsill.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lincoln?
The closest communities we cover are Rocklin (about 5 miles), Roseville (about 8 miles) and Citrus Heights (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lincoln too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Lincoln climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[3]. We show it on the Lincoln page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How many cat owners live in Lincoln?
By our estimate, about 8,950 households in Lincoln have at least one cat, and around 800 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 57,367, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How quickly does my cat need to be collected in hot weather?
In summer heat, aim for collection the same day, or the next morning if you can keep your cat cool indoors. Keep the air conditioning on and place your cat in a box in the coolest room with two or three wrapped ice packs or frozen bottles alongside, not underneath. A cat's small size makes this easy to manage for a night.
My outdoor cat hasn't come home in the heat. Where should I look?
Cats who are ill or overheated look for cool, hidden places: under decks and porches, in sheds and garages, behind water heaters and under parked cars. Ask neighbors to check theirs too. If you find that your cat has died, use gloves and a towel, place them in a box and call your vet. A private cremation is still possible.
