Arranging your cat's cremation in Brentwood

Brentwood, California

Cat aftercare in Brentwood: the local picture

Brentwood has grown from a farm town into a sprawling East Contra Costa suburb: newer subdivisions and large active-adult communities sit alongside the old downtown, and farmhouses still line rural roads through the orchards. Some newer developments are gated and have a guard or call box. Let a provider know how to get through, or whether they should head down a farm lane marked only by a mailbox.

Brentwood's summers rank among the hottest in the Bay Area, with July highs around 93F and plenty of days above 100F, while December nights fall to about 40F. After a pet dies during a heat wave, shut the blinds, cool one room hard with the air conditioning and keep your pet there. In winter, delta fog may delay a driver coming out Highway 4, but you will have time.

Families in and around Brentwood often combine local and regional help: the goodbye happens at home or with the local vet, and the cremation itself takes place in a larger centre such as Stockton. If you'd like a witnessed cremation, ask early, as it may mean a drive. A cat travels easily in a lined basket on the back seat, and some crematories will give you a time to arrive.

With roughly 66,607 residents, Brentwood is the 125th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Brentwood are based about 22 miles away in Stockton, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Brentwood sits within easy reach of Oakley (5 miles), Discovery Bay (5 miles) and Antioch (8 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Brentwood; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

10,500

Estimated cat-owning households in Brentwood

How we calculated this

66,607 ÷ 2.5 = 26,643 households; × 39% (cat) = 10,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

930

cat deaths per year in Brentwood, our estimate

How we calculated this

10,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

39%[1]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[2]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

70.5%[3]

The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Cremation in California, and what it means for cat owners

When cremation is as routine as it is in California (roughly 70.5%[3] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.

We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Brentwood, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

What the seasons mean for cat owners in Brentwood

In the hottest months (June, July, August and September), outdoor cats go looking for shade under decks, in sheds and beneath parked cars, and a cat who is ill will often hide somewhere like that. If your cat hasn't come home in the heat, check the cool, dark places first. If you find them, use gloves and a towel, place them in a box and call your vet; there's no shame in needing help with this part.

Long, hot seasons like Brentwood's bring more outdoor activity for cats and more traffic on warm evenings, and road losses are one of the hardest ways to lose a cat. If a neighbor or passer-by finds your cat, ask them to move your cat off the road onto a towel if they can, and bring a box and a blanket when you go. Your vet can check for a microchip if identity is uncertain, and then help with cremation.

What cat cremation costs in Brentwood

US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Brentwood providers charge today. Use the table to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the container.

By our math, Brentwood loses roughly 930 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0.2 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

What's allowed in California after your cat dies

Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what California allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.

The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Brentwood may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do when your cat dies in Brentwood

  1. If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
  2. Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
  3. Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
  4. In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Brentwood. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.
  5. Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
  6. Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
  7. Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.

Memorials and keepsakes for your cat

Brentwood is known for its U-pick cherry orchards and summer sweet corn stands, and many families here have ties to the farms that ring the town. Companion animals often shared long summer evenings in backyards looking west to Mount Diablo. Those quiet evenings, and the rhythm of harvest seasons, often find their way into how families here remember a companion.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Brentwood?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brentwood?

Usually yes. Oakley is about 5 miles away, Discovery Bay is about 5 miles away and Antioch is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Where are the providers that serve Brentwood actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Stockton, about 22 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Brentwood and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How many cat owners live in Brentwood?

By our estimate, about 10,500 households in Brentwood have at least one cat, and around 930 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 66,607, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?

Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Brentwood often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.

How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?

Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
