Cremation in California, and what it means for cat owners
With cremation chosen for roughly 70.5%[3] of the population in California, the choice of method is widening too. Some pet crematories near Antioch now offer water-based cremation (aquamation), which uses warm water and alkali rather than flame and still returns ashes. If the gentler process appeals, ask whether it's offered for cats and how the price compares with a private cremation.

Local rules in California
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

What to do when your cat dies in Antioch
