A cat's ashes are treated very differently from a body: in most places you can keep them, move them between homes or across borders, or carry them on a plane if the container can be screened and the airline agrees. The first 48 hours, step by step
- Say goodbye in your own way. Nobody is waiting on you. Plenty of people spend an hour or two beside their cat, and holding them is perfectly fine.
- Let your other cats see the body if you have them. Some sniff and walk away, some lie down beside their companion. Either is normal.
- Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.

Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Emirates Hills?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
