Getting help for your cat in Abu Dhabi
Many Abu Dhabi pet owners are expatriates living in apartment towers on the island or in gated villa communities on the mainland, such as those on Saadiyat, Yas and Al Reem. Building management often has its own procedures for moving an animal through lobbies and lifts. Your vet can usually arrange collection and aftercare; mention your community and building when you ask, as access to some compounds is controlled.
Abu Dhabi's summer heat is extreme, with temperatures regularly above 40°C and high humidity on the coast. If your pet dies at home in those months, bring them into the coolest air-conditioned room immediately, place ice packs wrapped in towels under the body, and contact your vet quickly. Aftercare options in the emirate are more limited than in many Western cities, so your vet is usually the first point of contact.
Most cats in a city like Abu Dhabi live indoors, often in apartments, and their whole world is a few rooms. That shapes the goodbye. Many owners would rather not put an old cat through a carrier, a car and a waiting room at the end, so in-home euthanasia is popular here. If that appeals, book early: mobile vets in big cities often have waiting lists, and evening or weekend visits usually cost more.
Abu Dhabi's population is around 1,483,000.
If you want to compare providers, look at Emirates Hills (65 miles), Dubai (76 miles, a larger centre) and Sharjah (89 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[1]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Why cremation is familiar in United Arab Emirates, or isn't
Whatever the local customs around human funerals, cat cremation has become the usual choice for families who want to keep their cat close, not least because a cat's ashes fit in something the size of a teacup. The key questions in Abu Dhabi are the same as everywhere: private or communal, the total cost, timing and paperwork.
How Abu Dhabi's weather affects the first few hours
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. In warm weather, aim for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make a garden burial impossible until it thaws.

What cat cremation costs in Abu Dhabi
In Abu Dhabi, the first question to ask is whether individual cremation, with your cat's ashes returned, is available locally. In some places the only public route is collective disposal with no ashes returned. If you want the ashes, ask your vet which private provider they use, what it costs for a cat and how long the return takes.

What's allowed in United Arab Emirates after your cat dies
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for United Arab Emirates before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
In the UAE, pet burial isn't permitted and municipal disposal doesn't return ashes[4], so cremation is the only way to keep your cat's ashes. Shared cremation for a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900[5], and separate cremation more. Summer heat makes prompt collection essential; ask for the price and return method in writing.
What to do when your cat dies in Abu Dhabi
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this. What comes back from a cat is small enough to keep in a modest container on a shelf until you know what you want.
Remembering your cat in Abu Dhabi
Pet cremation is available in the UAE, but facilities are few, and many families rely on their vet to arrange it. Burial on residential land is generally not permitted in communities and rented villas. If you want your pet's ashes back, ask specifically for an individual cremation, how long it will take, and whether you can receive a certificate if you plan to travel with the ashes.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Abu Dhabi?
Usually yes. Emirates Hills is about 65 miles away, Dubai is about 76 miles away and Sharjah is about 89 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Abu Dhabi?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Abu Dhabi?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[6]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Abu Dhabi, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
What happens if my cat dies at night or on a weekend in Abu Dhabi?
Keep your cat somewhere cool, in a lined box with the door closed, and call your nearest emergency vet if you want advice; in a city like Abu Dhabi there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your cat until your regular vet or crematory opens. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.
What if individual pet cremation isn't available near Abu Dhabi?
In some places the only public service is collective disposal with no ashes returned. If you want your cat's ashes, ask your vet whether a private provider serves your area, even from another city; a cat is easy to transport. If that isn't possible, a garden burial where it's allowed, or a memorial built around fur, whiskers and photos, are both loving alternatives.
