How cat cremation works in Pamplona
Pet cremation is increasingly common across Spain, and in Pamplona many owners choose a private cremation with the ashes returned. City flats rarely have space for burial, and rules on burying animals vary, so cremation is often the simplest option. Some people keep the ashes at home, while others take a small portion to the mountains or countryside where they spent time with their pet, after checking local rules.
Pamplona sits between the Pyrenees and the dry south of Navarre, and its weather can change quickly: cold, damp winters with occasional snow and hot summer days, especially in July and August. In summer, cool your pet quickly by wrapping them in a towel and using cool packs, and keep them out of the sun. In winter you have a little more time, but it's still wise to arrange collection within a day or two.
Pamplona is big enough to offer real choice in cat aftercare but small enough that you'll often deal with the same few people from the first call to the return of the ashes. Most families here go through their vet, who works with one or two local crematories, and many cats are collected from home or the clinic within a day.
Pamplona's population is around 201,000. The nearest larger centre is Bilbao, about 72 miles (116 km) away, which is where some providers serving Pamplona are based.
For a second opinion on price, San Sebastian (39 miles), Bilbao (72 miles) and Zaragoza (89 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Pamplona routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Spain, at about 50.11%[1], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll see both among cat owners. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, and a cat's small amount of ash makes cremation easy to live with. Neither is more proper than the other.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Pamplona tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Pamplona's climate
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Pamplona where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[5]. Prices in Pamplona depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.

Rules worth knowing in Navarre
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Navarre and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
Spain is one of the European countries where dogs outnumber cats, with about 6.0 million pet cats[7]. Most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange incineración individual, which returns your cat's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and are often strict in towns.
Step by step in Pamplona
- Take a breath. The next hour asks nothing of you. When a cat dies at home, set them down on a towel, gently close the eyes if they'll stay shut, and fold the legs under as though they're curled up asleep.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other detail, the cost most of all, follows from this one decision.
- Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Most people in Pamplona live in apartment blocks, from the narrow streets of the old town within the city walls to newer districts like Mendillorri and Lezkairu. That means aftercare often starts with getting your pet down stairs or a lift, sometimes without a car. When you contact us, mention your neighborhood and floor, and whether you'd like collection from home or will go through your vet, which is how many people here arrange it.

Questions people ask
How do Spain attitudes to cremation compare?
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) puts the Spain human cremation rate at about 50.11%[1]. We show it on the Pamplona page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pamplona?
Usually yes. San Sebastian is about 39 miles away, Bilbao is about 72 miles away and Zaragoza is about 89 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Pamplona actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Bilbao, about 72 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pamplona and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
