Cat cremation in Bilbao

Bilbao, Basque Country

What arranging cat cremation in Bilbao is like

Most Bilbao households live in apartments, many in older buildings with narrow stairwells and small lifts, along a city squeezed into the valley of the Nervión estuary. Parking is scarce in neighbourhoods like the Casco Viejo, Deusto or Indautxu, and streets can be steep. If your pet dies at home, it helps to mention your floor, lift and street access when you ask for options, so any collection can be planned sensibly.

Pets are part of everyday life in Bilbao, from cats in flats overlooking the ría to birds, rabbits and small animals in family homes across Greater Bilbao. With little private garden space, home burial is rarely practical in the city, which is one reason cremation is a common choice. Ask whether the cremation is individual, with your pet's ashes returned, or communal, and get the full price in writing.

Most crematories and vets in Bilbao keep regular business hours, with an emergency line or an overnight clinic for everything else. If your cat dies on a Saturday evening, you'll usually have two sound choices: keep your cat cool at home until Monday, in a lined box in the coldest room, or take them to an emergency hospital that can hold them. The first saves a fee; the second can be easier in warm weather or with other pets around.

With roughly 346,000 residents, Bilbao is the largest of the 2 Basque Country communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Santander (46 miles), San Sebastian (48 miles) and Pamplona (72 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Bilbao routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation traditions in Spain

In a place like Spain, with a human cremation rate near 50.11%[1] and burial still common, pet cemeteries often sit alongside crematories. Some let you bury a cat's ashes in a small plot or niche rather than a full grave, which costs far less and gives you somewhere to visit. Ask local providers whether they offer this if a grave matters to you but a garden burial doesn't suit.

Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bilbao tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Bilbao's climate

If you're caring for an older or ill cat in Bilbao, think about the weather ahead. Heat can make a cat with kidney or heart disease much weaker, and storms or icy spells can make it hard to reach a vet quickly. Ask your vet whether home visits are possible in bad weather, and save the number of the nearest out-of-hours clinic now.

Cat cremation prices for Bilbao families

In Bilbao, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Basque Country: Basque Country costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Basque Country allows: burial, scattering and more

If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Basque Country says about burial and scattering.

Spain is one of the European countries where dogs outnumber cats, with about 6.0 million pet cats[5]. Most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange incineración individual, which returns your cat's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and are often strict in towns.

What to do when your cat dies in Bilbao

  1. If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
  2. If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Bilbao. They will walk you through what to do next.
  3. Keep your cat cool and indoors, in a box with a lid and a towel around them, which matters most when the weather is warm.
  4. Gather a few things to send with your cat: the blanket they loved, a well-chewed toy mouse, a card the kids have written.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
  6. Confirm the price in writing, pickup fee and container included, before anyone collects your cat.

Remembering your cat in Bilbao

Bilbao's climate is mild and wet, with rain in every season and humid summers that rarely get extremely hot. Even so, a pet's body should be kept cool within a few hours: lay your pet on a towel in the coolest room, place cold packs wrapped in cloth along the back and belly, and keep windows shaded. Taking a day to decide is reasonable, but not much longer in summer.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Spain?

For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bilbao follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Bilbao?

The closest communities we cover are Santander (about 46 miles), San Sebastian (about 48 miles) and Pamplona (about 72 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bilbao too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?

Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.

Why did my cat hide before they died?

Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Bilbao?

Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.

How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Bilbao?

Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[6]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Bilbao, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
