The local attitude to cremation
Local habits show up in small ways. Where about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, as in Japan, relatives are more likely to keep an urn themselves and less likely to question yours. Some owners keep a cat's ashes so they can one day be placed with a person, or scattered together with another cat from the same home. If that's something you'd like, keep the ashes sealed and labelled, and check the rules for any cemetery you have in mind.

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in Hyogo mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. Japan has about 8.847 million[5] pet cats, more than its dogs, and indoor-only cats live 16.34 years[6] on average, about two years longer than cats that go outside[7]. Legally, pets are treated as waste[8], and some ward collection routes don't return ashes[9]. Pet funerals with a short ceremony are common; ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨).
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If it's a child's cat, tell them simply and truthfully that the cat has died and won't come back. Avoid "put to sleep" with young children; it can make bedtime frightening.
- Let the child say goodbye in whatever way they choose, whether that's a last stroke, a picture slipped into the box or picking which blanket goes with the cat.
- Offer a small job, like picking a photo, writing the name for the urn label or keeping the collar safe. Children cope better with something to do.
- Phone the clinic or a Kobe pet crematory after the goodbye, and go for private cremation if your child is likely to want the ashes home.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kobe?
Usually yes. Osaka is about 17 miles away, Nara is about 35 miles away and Kyoto is about 39 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Kobe?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Hyogo?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Hyogo, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Kobe?

Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
