How cat cremation works in Sapporo
Pet farewells in Japan often follow the shape of a human funeral, and Sapporo families are no exception. Many choose an individual cremation where the family is present, then gather the bones with chopsticks, a practice known as kotsuage. Others prefer a communal cremation with a shared memorial. When you ask for options, say which style matters to you, and whether you want to attend in person.
Sapporo winters are long and snowy, and for months the ground is frozen and buried under snow. Home burial in a garden is rarely practical then, even for families in detached houses on the outskirts. The cold does give you a little more time before arrangements must be made, but keep your pet indoors in a cool room rather than outside, where snow and wildlife can be a problem. In summer, the climate is milder than most of Japan.
Most cats in a city like Sapporo live indoors, often in apartments, and their whole world is a few rooms. That shapes the goodbye. Many owners would rather not put an old cat through a carrier, a car and a waiting room at the end, so in-home euthanasia is popular here. If that appeals, book early: mobile vets in big cities often have waiting lists, and evening or weekend visits usually cost more.
Sapporo's population is around 1,953,000.

Why cremation is familiar in Japan, or isn't
In Japan, about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.
We take the Japan rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Sapporo, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasons, collection and burial in Sapporo
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Sapporo, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, an unheated room can safely hold your cat until morning. Either way, close the door so other pets can't disturb them, and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

How much to budget for your cat
In Tokyo, one memorial park charges about ¥14,300 for communal and ¥22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[4], while some ward collection routes cost less but don't return the ashes[5]. In Sapporo, ask any provider whether the ashes come back and what the package covers.

Rules worth knowing in Hokkaido
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
Japan has about 8.847 million[7] pet cats, more than its dogs, and indoor-only cats live 16.34 years[8] on average, about two years longer than cats that go outside[9]. Legally, pets are treated as waste[10], and some ward collection routes don't return ashes[5]. Pet funerals with a short ceremony are common; ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨).
What to do next, one step at a time
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. An emergency hospital's usual partner may differ from your own vet's, and you can name either or one you found yourself.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Many Sapporo households live in apartment buildings, where rules about pets and about what can be done on the premises vary. If your pet dies at home, you can usually keep them in a cool room for a short time while you arrange a farewell. In Japan, pet funeral services commonly offer collection from your home, and some use a mobile cremation vehicle that comes to you. Ask in advance whether your building allows that.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sapporo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much does cat cremation cost in Sapporo?
Prices depend on the country and whether you choose individual or communal cremation, but cats are always in the lowest weight band. Published examples include about AUD 412 in Australia for pets up to 5 kg[11] and €250 in Ireland for cats up to 10 kg[12]. Ask Sapporo providers for a written quote in local currency that lists collection and the container.
Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?
Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Sapporo often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Hokkaido?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Hokkaido, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Will a pet collection service come to an apartment in Sapporo?
Yes. City providers regularly collect from apartments and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's an elevator, where they can park and whether the concierge needs notice. With a cat, one person with a covered basket is usually enough, so collection is quick and discreet. If you'd rather, you can also take your cat to the clinic yourself by car or taxi.
