Cat Cremation in Hokkaido: what to know
If you're reading this because your cat is old or unwell, you're already doing something kind: planning ahead. Cats hide illness well, so the end often comes faster than owners expect. In Hokkaido, one phone call to your vet or a crematory now can settle the big questions, so that when the time comes you can focus on your cat.
In Hokkaido, as in most places, the vet is where the process usually starts. That's no bad thing: vets see loss often and work with local crematories. But you're not obliged to use the provider your vet suggests. Calling a crematory directly, or bringing your cat in yourself, is normal and can save money for exactly the same service.

Local habits around cremation and burial
When cremation is as routine as it is in Hokkaido (roughly 99.97%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Hokkaido rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
How much to budget for your cat
In Tokyo, one memorial park charges about ¥14,300 for communal and ¥22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[2], while some ward collection routes cost less but don't return the ashes[3]. In Hokkaido, ask any provider whether the ashes come back and what the package covers.
In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at about HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[4], the band most cats fall into. Wherever you are, give your cat's approximate weight when you ask Hokkaido providers for quotes, and check whether collection and the return of the ashes are included.
| Place | Example price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private[5] | Columbarium niches extra |
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | ¥14,300 communal / ¥22,000 individual[2] | Tax included |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual[4] | Basic individual cremation |
| Japan (1 to 5 kg pet) | about ¥60,000[6] | Funeral package with ceremony |

Burial and scattering rules for Hokkaido
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Hokkaido allows for burial and scattering.
Japan has about 8.847 million[8] pet cats, more than its dogs, and indoor-only cats live 16.34 years[9] on average, about two years longer than cats that go outside[10]. Legally, pets are treated as waste[11], and some ward collection routes don't return ashes[3]. Pet funerals with a short ceremony are common; ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨).
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Hokkaido. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Many Hokkaido families keep their cat's ashes indoors, near a window or the chair their cat claimed, rather than scattering them outdoors, especially for an indoor cat whose whole world was the home. A cat's ashes fit in a small urn or a keepsake box, and some people move a pinch into a locket so they can carry it.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in Hokkaido?
We currently have local cat cremation guides for 1 communities in Hokkaido, including Sapporo. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Hokkaido?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Hokkaido?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in Hokkaido?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of Hokkaido, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
How much does cat cremation cost in Hokkaido?
Prices across Hokkaido depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Hokkaido?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
