Hiroshima is built on the delta where the Ota River splits into several channels before reaching the Seto Inland Sea, so much of the city is flat and crossed by bridges, with hillside neighbourhoods rising behind it. Many families live in apartments or tight houses close together. Hiroshima's summers are hot and humid, and the rainy season in early summer brings heavy downpours; the hillside districts have suffered serious landslides in recent years. Cremation in Japan, and what it means for cat owners
Japan is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 99.97%[1] for people, and for most cat owners it will feel like the natural choice too. Still, give it a moment's thought. Would you like to keep the ashes, scatter them in the garden your cat watched from the window, or bury them under a plant? The answer decides whether you need a decorative urn now or a simple sealed container until you're ready.

How Hiroshima's weather affects the first few hours

What Japan allows: burial, scattering and more
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Japan allows for burial and scattering.
Japan has about 8.847 million[6] pet cats, more than its dogs, and indoor-only cats live 16.34 years[7] on average, about two years longer than cats that go outside[8]. Legally, pets are treated as waste[9], and some ward collection routes don't return ashes[10]. Pet funerals with a short ceremony are common; ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨).
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning. Move your cat to a cool room and cover them with a towel.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Hiroshima. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.

Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hiroshima follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Japan?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Japan, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
What happens if my cat dies at night or on a weekend in Hiroshima?
Keep your cat somewhere cool, in a lined box with the door closed, and call your nearest emergency vet if you want advice; in a city like Hiroshima there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your cat until your regular vet or crematory opens. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.
Are pet funerals with a ceremony common for cats in Hiroshima?
In many parts of Asia, yes. Providers often offer a short farewell ceremony, sometimes with incense, flowers or a religious element, before an individual cremation, and some have columbarium niches. None of it is compulsory. If you'd prefer a simple cremation with your cat's ashes returned, say so and ask for that price on its own.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Are there vets in Hiroshima who will put my cat to sleep at home?
In a large city you'll usually find several mobile vets who offer in-home euthanasia, and many cat owners prefer it because it avoids the carrier and the car. At-home visits cost more than the clinic; for cats in the US, about 2.27x[11] the price. Book as early as you can, and ask whether the vet can take your cat for cremation afterwards.
