Japan is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 99.97%[1] for people, and for most cat owners it will feel like the natural choice too. Still, give it a moment's thought. Would you like to keep the ashes, scatter them in the garden your cat watched from the window, or bury them under a plant? The answer decides whether you need a decorative urn now or a simple sealed container until you're ready.

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in Japan mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.
Japan has about 8.847 million[5] pet cats, more than its dogs, and indoor-only cats live 16.34 years[6] on average, about two years longer than cats that go outside[7]. Legally, pets are treated as waste[8], and some ward collection routes don't return ashes[9]. Pet funerals with a short ceremony are common; ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨).
What to do when your cat dies in Fukuoka
- If you find your cat outdoors, bring gloves, a towel and a box. Lift them gently onto the towel and carry them home or to your car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or a neighbor found them, ask a vet to scan for a microchip. Most clinics will do it quickly.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room in the house while you get hold of your vet or a crematory covering Fukuoka.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and tell anyone who helped you look for your cat, so they can stop searching.

Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Fukuoka follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Fukuoka?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
What if individual pet cremation isn't available near Fukuoka?
In some places the only public service is collective disposal with no ashes returned. If you want your cat's ashes, ask your vet whether a private provider serves your area, even from another city; a cat is easy to transport. If that isn't possible, a garden burial where it's allowed, or a memorial built around fur, whiskers and photos, are both loving alternatives.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?

Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
