Saying goodbye to your cat in Rome

Rome, Lazio

How cat cremation works in Rome

Many Roman families connect their pet with a particular place: a sunny terrace among the rooftops, a quiet courtyard, or the paths of Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphili or the Appia Antica park. Scattering or burying ashes on public land generally isn't allowed without permission, so most families keep the ashes at home. Italy's burial culture is still strong, and some families prefer a plot in a pet cemetery to an urn on a shelf.

Most Romans live in apartment buildings, from centuries-old palazzi in the historic center to postwar blocks in the outer quartieri, and gardens are rare. Narrow streets, limited traffic zones and scarce parking make collection from home the easiest route for many families, with pet crematoria usually located outside the Grande Raccordo Anulare. When you ask for options, mention your neighborhood, floor and whether the building has a lift.

Many Rome households have two or three cats sharing a small space, and the cats left behind often notice the gap straight away. Some search the apartment and call; others sleep in the missing cat's spot. Many owners let the other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection. It does no harm, and in a small home it can settle things. Keep feeding times and litter routines steady for a few weeks afterwards.

With roughly 2,873,000 residents, Rome is one of the Lazio communities we cover.

Our pages for Siena (114 miles), Naples (117 miles) and Florence (143 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Rome as well.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation

About 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, lower than in many places. Older relatives may expect a garden burial and younger ones may assume cremation. Talk it through if you like, but it's your household's decision. Some families do both: cremation first, then a small burial of the ashes under a plant or stone, so there's still somewhere to visit.

That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Rome only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Rome's climate

Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Rome, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, an unheated room can safely hold your cat until morning. Either way, close the door so other pets can't disturb them, and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

How much to budget for your cat

Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[4], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Rome. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[5], which is longer than many owners expect.

Local rules in Lazio

If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Lazio says about burial and scattering.

Italy has about 10.2 million pet cats[7], more than its dogs. Pet cremation is widely available through private crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individuale (ashes returned) or collettiva. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune first.

Step by step in Rome

  1. Take a breath. The next hour asks nothing of you. When a cat dies at home, set them down on a towel, gently close the eyes if they'll stay shut, and fold the legs under as though they're curled up asleep.
  2. Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
  3. Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
  4. Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
  5. Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other detail, the cost most of all, follows from this one decision.
  6. Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
  7. Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.

Keeping your cat's memory close in Rome

Rome's summers are long and hot, with July and August regularly climbing past 30°C and apartments holding the heat. A pet's body needs cooling within a few hours: cover your pet loosely with a towel and set frozen packs alongside and set them in the room that stays coolest, ideally with shutters closed. Winters are mild, so you have a little more time then, but arranging aftercare inside forty-eight hours is still the safer plan.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rome follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rome?

Usually yes. Siena is about 114 miles away, Naples is about 117 miles away and Florence is about 143 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?

Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.

What happens if my cat dies at night or on a weekend in Rome?

Keep your cat somewhere cool, in a lined box with the door closed, and call your nearest emergency vet if you want advice; in a city like Rome there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your cat until your regular vet or crematory opens. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.

Why do quotes for the same cat cremation in Rome vary so much?

In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which container is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cat cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote, then compare the cremation line on its own.

Should my other cats see the cat who died?

Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
