Getting help for your cat in Naples
Naples is one of Europe's most densely built cities, with families living in tall palazzi in the historic centre, the Quartieri Spagnoli and up on the Vomero, often reached by long stairways and narrow streets where parking is almost impossible. Home collection is what most Neapolitan owners want, and it helps to describe access clearly, including whether a car can stop outside. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option in such a crowded city.
Neapolitan families spend time on the lungomare along the bay, in the Villa Comunale and in the woods of Capodimonte, but many pets here live their lives on balconies and roof terraces above the city's streets. Many owners ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home. Confirm the type of cremation in writing, since a communal cremation returns no ashes, and ask whether a certificate comes with them.
In a metro the size of Naples, traffic and parking shape the day more than distance. A crematory van crossing town at rush hour may give you a two- or three-hour window rather than a time. If that's hard to manage, ask whether you can drop your cat at the nearest partner clinic instead, or whether a provider nearer Campania covers your address. Tell them about parking, stairs and entry codes when you book.
About 967,000 people live in Naples.
For a second opinion on price, Rome (117 miles, a larger centre) and Bari (137 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Naples routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Why cremation is familiar in Italy, or isn't
About 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, lower than in many places. Older relatives may expect a garden burial and younger ones may assume cremation. Talk it through if you like, but it's your household's decision. Some families do both: cremation first, then a small burial of the ashes under a plant or stone, so there's still somewhere to visit.
That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Naples only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, collection and burial in Naples
Local weather affects two things: how quickly your cat should be collected, and whether a burial or scattering outdoors is practical. Your provider in Naples will know the seasons well, so ask them what they'd suggest at this time of year.

How much to budget for your cat
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[5]. Prices in Naples depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.

Rules worth knowing in Campania
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Campania before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
Italy has about 10.2 million pet cats[7], more than its dogs. Pet cremation is widely available through private crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individuale (ashes returned) or collettiva. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune first.
Step by step in Naples
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if you'd like one. A paw print must be taken before cremation, and fur is easier to clip now too.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet. If you'd rather, we can send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, then have the provider put that choice in writing.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this. What comes back from a cat is small enough to keep in a modest container on a shelf until you know what you want.
Remembering your cat in Naples
Naples has hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. In July and August, time matters if your pet dies at home: keep the body in the coolest room, on a towel, with wrapped ice packs, and arrange cremation within a day. Around Ferragosto in mid-August, when much of Italy is on holiday and many services run reduced hours, ask early about timing and whether cool storage is available.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Naples?
The closest communities we cover are Rome (about 117 miles) and Bari (about 137 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Naples too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Naples follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Naples?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[8]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Naples, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[6], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[9]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[10] the communal price.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Naples?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Naples offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
