Cork is built on steep hills rising from the River Lee, and much of the city is terraced housing on sloping streets, from Shandon and Sunday's Well on the north side to Ballintemple and Douglas on the south, with newer estates spreading out to Ballincollig and Carrigaline. Parking on the old hill streets can be tight. When you ask for aftercare options, tell us your area and any steps or access issues, so collection can be planned properly.
Cork has a mild, wet Atlantic climate, with soft rain much of the year, cool summers and winters that rarely bring hard frost. That gives you a little time after a pet dies, but the body should still be kept cool: lay your pet on a towel in the coldest room of the house, with cool packs alongside, and try to arrange collection within a day. Heavy rain can flood low-lying streets near the Lee, so allow for delays.
Families in Cork usually have several vets and at least one crematory within a short drive, which gives you room to choose. If your cat trusted a particular clinic team, that bond counts; many people want familiar hands at the end. If price or a witnessed cremation matters more, calling a crematory directly is completely normal. You can also mix the two: the goodbye with your own vet, the cremation arranged by you.

The local attitude to cremation
In places where burial is the custom, as in Ireland, where cremation covers just 26.56%[1] of human deaths, clinic staff may assume you'll take your cat home to bury. If you'd rather have your cat cremated, say it plainly: individual cremation, ashes returned to me. Asking in those words gets you a clear price and a clear answer about who carries it out.
We take the Ireland rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Cork, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Weather, timing and your cat in Cork
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Cork, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, an unheated room can safely hold your cat until morning. Either way, close the door so other pets can't disturb them, and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4], with cats at the low end. Burial and scattering rules for Munster
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Munster before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
Ireland is one of the few European countries where dogs outnumber cats, with about 371,000[7] pet cats against about 517,000 dogs[8]. Individual pet cremation is widely available through vets and dedicated crematoria; one lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[5]. Ask whether ashes come back to your vet or to your home.
What to do next, one step at a time
- If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. Cancer, thyroid disease or failing kidneys usually leave you weeks, sometimes months, to make plans without pressure.
- Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.

- Write your wishes down and ask the vet to add them to your cat's record, so an emergency hospital or a locum in Cork can follow them too.

Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?

How much ash will I get back from my cat?

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Cork?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
