Ask any provider for written confirmation of whether the cremation is individual, and whether the ashes returned are only your pet's.
Dublin's weather is mild and damp for most of the year, with few hard frosts and rarely any real heat. Cremation traditions in Ireland
Where fewer families choose cremation for themselves, as in Ireland (around 26.56%[1]), the business that collects animals from a clinic isn't always a dedicated pet crematory. Some also handle farm animals or general animal disposal. For a cat you want returned, ask where exactly your cat will go and whether the site does individual pet cremation. A good provider will tell you without hesitation.

Burial and scattering rules for Leinster
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Leinster allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
Dublin City Council Animal Welfare Unit publishes Dublin's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
Ireland is one of the few European countries where dogs outnumber cats, with about 371,000[7] pet cats against about 517,000 dogs[8]. Individual pet cremation is widely available through vets and dedicated crematoria; one lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[9]. Ask whether ashes come back to your vet or to your home.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes when a death came out of nowhere. A post-mortem is an option too, but only before the cremation, so raise it straight away if you want one.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. An emergency hospital's usual partner may differ from your own vet's, and you can name either or one you found yourself.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.
Keeping your cat's memory close in Dublin
Dublin is a city of terraced houses, newer apartment blocks and long suburban estates stretching out toward Fingal and the mountains, and many homes have only a small back garden. That matters because garden burial, long the Irish default for a family pet, is not realistic for everyone. Cremation has become a common choice for pets even though most Irish families still bury their human dead, and home collection is usually what Dublin owners ask for first.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dublin?
Usually yes. Galway is about 116 miles away and Cork is about 137 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Dublin page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Dublin?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[6]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[10], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[11]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
