Why cremation is familiar in Germany, or isn't
In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Germany figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Leipzig tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Leipzig's climate

Burial and scattering rules for Saxony
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Saxony allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[5], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[6], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[7]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
What to do next, one step at a time
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
- Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your cat, and leave the food bowls out until you feel ready to move them.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Leipzig?
Usually yes. Dresden is about 62 miles away, Berlin is about 93 miles away and Hanover is about 134 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. Can I bury my cat in the garden in Saxony?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Saxony, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
