Hanover, Lower Saxony
Cat aftercare in Hanover: the local picture
Pet cremation is well established across Germany, and many regions also have dedicated pet cemeteries. Whether you may bury a pet in your own garden in the Hanover area depends on local conditions, such as water-protection zones and the size of the plot, so ask your municipality before digging. For people in flats, cremation with the ashes returned is often the simplest route, leaving time to decide on a memorial later.
Lower Saxony's weather is mostly mild and damp, so after a death at home there is usually no need to rush. Lay your pet on a towel in an unheated room, turn the radiator off, and place cold packs wrapped in cloth nearby on warmer days. Many Hanover families use that time to let children, partners and neighbours who knew the animal come by, and to call the vet for advice on the next step.
Prices in Hanover tend to follow the cost of living. Rent, wages and fuel all feed into what a crematory or mobile vet charges, so a private cat cremation here can land above the national averages you'll see online, and an after-hours collection above that. That isn't a sign you're being overcharged. It is a reason to ask for an itemized total, covering pickup, the cremation, the container and any paw print, before you agree.
With roughly 536,000 residents, Hanover is one of the Lower Saxony communities we cover.
Families in Hanover often end up using a provider from Bremen (62 miles), Hamburg (82 miles, a larger centre) and Munster (94 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Why cremation is familiar in Germany, or isn't
With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany choosing cremation, you'll rarely need to explain your decision. It also shapes what's on offer. Providers in high-cremation areas often stock small urns sized for cats, keepsake lockets and whisker or fur vials, because families ask for them. Look at the full range before you choose; with so little ash, even a tiny keepsake box will do.

Hanover weather and timing
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Hanover where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What cat cremation costs in Hanover
In Hanover, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Lower Saxony: Lower Saxony costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Lower Saxony allows: burial, scattering and more
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Lower Saxony allows for burial and scattering.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[5], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[6], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[7]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
What to do when your cat dies in Hanover
- Say goodbye in your own way. Nobody is waiting on you. Plenty of people spend an hour or two beside their cat, and holding them is perfectly fine.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet. If you'd rather, we can send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, then have the provider put that choice in writing.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; a cat's ashes fit in a small container that can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.
Remembering your cat, in Hanover and beyond
Hanover is greener than many visitors expect, with the Eilenriede, one of Europe's larger city forests, close to the centre and the Maschsee lake just south. Most pet owners, though, live in apartments, from pre-war blocks in List and Linden to newer estates on the edge. Tell a provider which floor you are on, whether the stairwell is narrow, and where a car can stop, since that shapes how a collection is handled.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hanover follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hanover?
Usually yes. Bremen is about 62 miles away, Hamburg is about 82 miles away and Munster is about 94 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Is individual cat cremation available in Hanover?
In most European cities, yes. Pet crematoria usually offer collective cremation, where ashes aren't returned, and individual cremation, where they are. Your vet can arrange either, or you can contact a crematorium directly. Ask for a written price for a cat and confirmation that the cremation is individual. Some crematoria also let you attend.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Hanover?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Hanover offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
