On a hot day in July, draw the curtains, open a window on the shaded side and rest your pet on a towel over a frozen pack; in winter a cold stairwell storeroom or unheated room does the job. Many Munich households are within reach of the English Garden or the Isar, and those places often shape how families remember a pet.
Munich's waste-management service collects ownerless dead animals found in public spaces, up to roughly the size of a German shepherd. For a pet you own, the city points to separate options: burial in your own garden, which is allowed only under certain conditions, a pet cemetery, or a pet crematorium. If you are unsure whether garden burial is allowed where you live, cremation is the simpler route.
A large metro like Munich usually has at least one veterinary hospital open around the clock, and that matters for cats, because so many crises come at night. If your cat dies at 3 am, an emergency clinic can confirm the death, keep your cat in a cold room and hold them until you've chosen a crematory. There's usually a fee for this, so ask. The local attitude to cremation
When cremation is as routine as it is in Germany (roughly 76.0%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.

How Munich's weather affects the first few hours

What Bavaria allows: burial, scattering and more
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[7], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[8], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[9]. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Munich?
Usually yes. Starnberg is about 14 miles away, Augsburg is about 35 miles away and Regensburg is about 65 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?

Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
Why do quotes for the same cat cremation in Munich vary so much?
In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which container is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cat cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote, then compare the cremation line on its own.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
