Cat Cremation in Bavaria: what to know
In Bavaria, a lot of cat aftercare now starts before a death rather than after it. Many owners of senior cats book a home goodbye in advance, choose a crematory while their cat is still comfortable and ask their vet to put those wishes on file. If your cat has been diagnosed with kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or cancer, this page and your city page can help you plan at your own pace.
Whether you're in one of the larger cities like Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg or a small town, the questions to ask are the same: is it private, how is my cat identified, what's the total price in writing and when will the ashes come home? This guide explains the picture for Bavaria, and each city page goes deeper.

How Bavaria thinks about cremation
Bavaria is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 76.0%[1] for people, and for most cat owners it will feel like the natural choice too. Still, give it a moment's thought. Would you like to keep the ashes, scatter them in the garden your cat watched from the window, or bury them under a plant? The answer decides whether you need a decorative urn now or a simple sealed container until you're ready.
We take the Bavaria percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What cat owners in Bavaria typically pay
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[2] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[3] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for Germany.
Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[4], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Bavaria. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[5], which is longer than many owners expect.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (all pets) | €85 to €205[6] | €165 to €375[6] |
| Ireland (cats up to 10 kg) | n/a | €250[7] |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150[7] |
| Norway (1 to 20 kg) | from NOK 1,190[8] | NOK 3,790[8] |

Burial, ashes and the rules in Bavaria
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Bavaria, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about burying your cat in the garden, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[10], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[11], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[12]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or ask the team to send the blanket with your cat.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
A clay paw print on the mantel, a small vial of shed whiskers or a lock of fur sealed in a frame are keepsakes only a cat leaves behind. Some families in Bavaria also make a donation of food or litter to a Bavaria shelter in their cat's name; ask first what they can use, as opened bags often can't be accepted.

Questions people ask
Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in Bavaria?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of Bavaria, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Bavaria?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
Do cats outnumber dogs in Bavaria?
In much of Europe, yes: the continent has about 108.3 million[2] pet cats against 89.6 million[3] dogs. The balance differs by country, and in a few places dogs still lead. Either way, every pet crematorium in Bavaria handles cats routinely, and individual cremation for a cat sits in the lowest price band.
How much does cat cremation cost in Bavaria?
Prices across Bavaria depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Bavaria?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in Bavaria often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
