Cat cremation in Bordeaux: how it usually works
Bordeaux has an oceanic climate, with mild, wet winters and summers that are usually warm but can bring intense heatwaves, as in 2022 when wildfires burned large areas of the Gironde forest. On a hot day, close the shutters, set your pet on a towel on the coolest tiled floor, keep wrapped cold packs against the body, and arrange collection or a vet visit within the day.
French vets commonly organize pet cremation, and the choice in Bordeaux usually comes down to individual cremation, which returns your pet's ashes, or collective cremation, which costs less and returns nothing. Say which you want clearly, since the vet may ask soon after a death. Request the price in writing and find out when you can collect the urn. Most vets will also explain the options plainly if asked.
Plenty of cat owners in Bordeaux live alone, and that can make the practical side feel heavier. Who helps you lift the box, who drives? Most providers here will collect from inside your home, and your vet's team can meet you at the car if you bring your cat in. It's fine to ask a friend or neighbor just to sit with you while you make the calls.
Bordeaux is home to about 249,000 people.

The local attitude to cremation
Burial runs deep in France, with only about 44.91%[1] of people cremated. For a cat, a grave in the garden is still a very common choice, and a loving one where it's allowed. If you're leaning towards cremation instead, you won't be alone: it keeps options open, including burying the ashes later in a place you'll always be able to reach.
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) is where the France figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bordeaux tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Bordeaux weather and timing
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. In warm weather, aim for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make a garden burial impossible until it thaws.

What cat cremation costs in Bordeaux
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[5]. Prices in Bordeaux depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.

What Nouvelle-Aquitaine allows: burial, scattering and more
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Nouvelle-Aquitaine allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
France has about 14.9 million pet cats[7], almost twice its dog population. Your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle; only individual cremation returns your cat's ashes. Cats in France must be identified, so after your cat dies, let the national identification register know, or ask your vet to do it.
What to do next, one step at a time
- Book the appointment for a slot that suits everyone who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible, since your cat is most at ease there.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you're not asked to choose in the moment. Private cremation, communal cremation or garden burial are the usual options.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or tell them which crematory you've chosen yourself.
- Prepare a quiet space that's warm and feels like home, with the bed or blanket your cat likes best and some of their favorite treats within reach.
- Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so you aren't handed forms once it's over.
- Stay as long as you need once your cat has gone. Nobody will hurry you.
- Check the written confirmation of the cremation type and return date before the vet leaves.
Remembering your cat in Bordeaux
Bordeaux mixes tall eighteenth-century limestone apartment buildings in the center with streets of échoppes, the single-story terraced houses with small back gardens found in districts like Saint-Augustin and Caudéran. The tram network covers much of the city and many residents live without a car. If your pet dies at home, tell your vet or provider whether you can travel and whether you need someone to collect.

Questions people ask
Why does the Bordeaux page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is individual cat cremation available in Bordeaux?
In most European cities, yes. Pet crematoria usually offer collective cremation, where ashes aren't returned, and individual cremation, where they are. Your vet can arrange either, or you can contact a crematorium directly. Ask for a written price for a cat and confirmation that the cremation is individual. Some crematoria also let you attend.
Is there a pet crematory in Bordeaux itself?
Sometimes, but it matters less than you'd think. Crematories need space and permits, so many sit on the edge of town or in a larger centre such as Bordeaux. What counts is whether they collect from your address or your vet, how long the ashes take and whether they'll confirm a private cremation in writing.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[8] the communal price.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Nouvelle-Aquitaine, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[9], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[10]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
