The first 48 hours, step by step
- If it's a child's cat, use plain, honest words: the cat has died and isn't coming home. Steer clear of "put to sleep" around little ones, who may then be scared to go to bed.
- Let the child say goodbye in whatever way they choose, whether that's a last stroke, a picture slipped into the box or picking which blanket goes with the cat.

Can a vet come to my home to put my cat to sleep anywhere in Brazil?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and they're especially popular with cat owners because it avoids the carrier and the car. In rural parts of Brazil, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Brazil?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Brazil?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them.
