What arranging cat cremation in Geelong is like
Geelong wraps around Corio Bay, from the waterfront and older weatherboard streets of Newtown and Belmont to new estates at Armstrong Creek and the townships of the Bellarine. Most families have a yard and a car, so getting to a vet or provider is rarely a long trip. When your pet dies at home, you can ask for collection or take your pet in; mention your suburb when you ask for options.
Geelong weather turns quickly. Winters are cool and blustery off Bass Strait, while summer can bring scorching northerly days and bushfire alerts in the hills and bush around the city. On a hot day, keep your pet's body inside on a towel with cold packs close by and the air conditioner on, and plan cremation within a day. A chilly July night gives you a little more time.
One useful thing to do in Geelong while your cat is still well: ask your vet to note your aftercare wishes on your cat's file. If your cat is ever taken to an emergency hospital or seen by a locum vet, the team there can check the record and follow your choice of private or communal cremation, even if you're too upset to explain.
Geelong is home to about 268,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 5 Victoria communities we cover. Melbourne, roughly 40 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Geelong run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Melbourne (40 miles, a larger centre), Toorak (41 miles) and Ballarat (49 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Geelong too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
36,500
Geelong: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
268,000 ÷ 2.5 = 107,200 households; × 34% (cat) = 36,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,250
cat deaths per year in Geelong, our estimate
How we calculated this
36,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,250 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
34%[1]
34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
71%[3]
Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
The published sources behind those figures are Animal Medicines Australia, Pets in Australia 2025 (media release) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Local habits around cremation and burial
In Australia, about 71%[3] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.
We take the Australia rate from FuneralSmart (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Geelong, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Geelong weather and timing
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. In warm weather, aim for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make a garden burial impossible until it thaws.

Cat cremation costs around Geelong
About 34%[1] of Australian households now have a cat, up from 27% in 2019, and cat-owning households spend about A$1,656[5] a year on them. End-of-life care can be one of the larger single bills. Some rescues offer lower-cost memorial packages: RSPCA Queensland's individual cremation packages start from AUD 250[6].

Burial, ashes and the rules in Victoria
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
In Australia, about 34%[1] of households now have a cat. Many councils restrict backyard burial in suburban areas, and some have cat containment rules or curfews. Summer heat makes prompt collection important. Pet crematoria in the capitals commonly offer home pickup; regional families usually go through their local vet, and most providers price cats in a single small-pet band.
The Victoria page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Geelong's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Step by step in Geelong
- If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. A kidney, thyroid or cancer diagnosis often gives weeks or months to plan quietly.
- Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like with this particular illness, and what changes should prompt another conversation.
- Choose the aftercare now: private or communal cremation, and who collects your cat. Compare prices with our cost calculator while you're calm.
- Write your wishes down and ask the vet to add them to your cat's record, so an emergency hospital or a locum in Geelong can follow them too.
- Pick the place for the goodbye: your own home, a quiet room at the clinic, or outside in the garden if the weather is kind. If home is your preference, keep a mobile vet's number handy.
- Spend the good days well. Favorite food, sunny windows, brushing, photos. Planning is there so the last days can be about your cat, not phone calls.
Keeping your cat close
Many Geelong families choose private cremation and keep the ashes at home, while others bury a pet in the backyard. Rules on home burial differ between the City of Greater Geelong and neighboring shires, so check with your council before digging. Ask each provider to put private and communal prices in writing, along with how long the ashes take to come back.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Australia?
For people, yes: about 71%[3] of Australia deaths end in cremation, according to FuneralSmart (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Geelong follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many cat owners live in Geelong?
By our estimate, about 36,500 households in Geelong have at least one cat, and around 3,250 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 268,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Geelong?
Usually yes. Melbourne is about 40 miles away, Toorak is about 41 miles away and Ballarat is about 49 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Melbourne to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Melbourne (roughly 40 miles from Geelong) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[8] the communal price.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
