Should I cremate or bury my cat?
US owners are close to evenly split: in one survey, 40.4% preferred cremation and 34.9% home burial[1]. The right answer usually comes down to where you live, whether you might move, and how your cat's life ended.

The short answer
Cremation or burial: which suits your cat and your home?
Choose cremation if you rent, might move, want to keep your cat close, or your cat was euthanized and you can't dig a deep grave. Choose home burial if you own your land, local rules allow it, and a resting place in the garden they patrolled feels right. A pet cemetery gives you a permanent, tended grave but costs the most.
Neither is more loving than the other. In the Competition and Markets Authority's UK survey, 67%[2] of owners whose pet died in the previous two years chose cremation, while 27%[3] buried their pet at home. The rest of this piece covers the practical details that usually tip the decision.

Home burial
Can you legally bury a cat in your backyard?
In much of the US, yes, on land you own, but rules are set by your city or county, not nationally. Some cities ban it outright; others set distances from wells, streams and property lines. Search your city's code for "animal burial" or call the local environmental health office before you dig.
- Renting? You need the landlord's written permission, and many leases prohibit it.
- Homeowners' association? Check the rules; some forbid burials in shared or front yards.
- Utility lines. In the US, call 811 a few days before digging so buried cables and pipes are marked.
- Water. Keep well away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
- Outside the US: Germany requires at least 50 cm of soil cover and bans home burial in water-protection areas[4]; burial isn't permitted at all in the UAE[5].
Our locations directory covers local rules and providers by state and country, which is a useful starting point before you call the council or county.
Doing it safely
How deep should you bury a cat, and why does euthanasia matter?
Guidance varies, but many vets and local authorities suggest at least two to three feet of soil above your cat. Legal minimums are shallower: under GOV.UK rules for pet cemeteries, English pet cemeteries must bury at least 0.5 m deep[6], and that's for managed ground. Foxes, coyotes, raccoons and the neighbor's dog can all dig further than people expect.
Wrap your cat in a cotton blanket or a plain wooden or cardboard box rather than plastic, which slows natural breakdown. A heavy paving slab or a large stone on top of the filled grave deters digging and gives you somewhere to put a name. Engraved natural-stone markers cost about $38–$115[8].

Prices
What does a pet cemetery cost for a cat compared with cremation?
CareCredit's 2025 figures put US cat cemetery burial at about $566, against $180 for cremation[9]. Posted cemetery price lists vary a lot: across five we reviewed, our estimate of the median whole-body burial for a small pet is ~$350[10], including plot and opening. One Oregon cemetery charges $350[11] for pets under 15 lb.
Those are entry prices. Once you add a casket, a headstone, a graveside service and perpetual care, a review of 15 US pet cemeteries found typical totals of $1,500–$2,000[12]. In the UK, plot fees often run £200–£800+[13].
Cremation is usually the lower-cost path, and communal cremation lower still. The cat cremation cost guide has prices by country and the line items to check on any quote.
Thinking ahead
What if you move house, and can you bury the ashes instead?
A garden grave stays with the house. That's the question many owners wish they'd asked themselves first: if you're likely to move in the next few years, a backyard burial means leaving your cat behind. Exhuming a pet is distressing and, in some places, restricted.
Many families find a middle way: cremate, then bury the ashes. A biodegradable urn under a rosebush gives you a garden resting place, and you can keep a spoonful back for a pendant. Burying ashes at a cemetery is cheaper than a full grave too: one US cemetery charges $400[14] for a cremains plot, and a UK one £60–£145[15].
If you want a private cremation so the ashes are your cat's alone, our private vs communal comparison explains how to confirm it. For a garden or indoor memorial, see memorial ideas for cats.
Another option
Where does water cremation fit in?
Aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) uses warm water and an alkaline solution rather than flame, typically for 12–20 hours at 200°F[18]. You get back soft white bone powder, which you can keep, scatter or bury just like ashes. Some owners choose it as a lower-emission option; the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance's aquamation overview explains how it works.
It's offered in fewer places. One US provider charges $150 to $450 by weight for private aquamation[19], and a cat falls at the bottom of that range. Only a small share of owners, 1.9%[1] in one US survey, named it as their preferred choice, often because they hadn't heard of it.

Questions people ask
Do I need a coffin to bury my cat?
No. A cotton blanket, a pillowcase or a plain wooden or cardboard box all work and let the body return to the soil naturally. Avoid plastic bags and sealed plastic boxes. Pet cemeteries may have their own rules on containers, and some sell small caskets, so ask before you buy one separately.
Can I bury my cat in a park, forest or on a beach?
Generally no. Public land belongs to someone else, and burying an animal there is usually against local law and risky for wildlife. Japan, for instance, explicitly makes it illegal to bury animals in public places such as parks[20]. If you love a particular spot, scattering a little of your cat's ashes there with permission is often a better fit.
Can I bury my cat with their collar and toys?
Yes, in a home grave you can include a collar, a favorite toy or a catnip mouse. Natural materials break down; plastic and metal will stay in the soil for a very long time, so some owners keep the collar as a keepsake instead. Pet cemeteries may restrict what goes in the grave, so check their rules.
How long can I keep my cat at home before burial or cremation?
In a cool room, usually around a day, and longer if your cat is kept cold with wrapped ice packs. In warm weather, move faster. If you need more time to decide between burial and cremation, your vet or a crematory can usually store your cat in refrigeration for a few days.
Can my cat's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. Rules for placing pet ashes in human graves vary by state, country and individual cemetery; some allow it, some don't, and a few pet-friendly cemeteries welcome it. If this matters to you, write it into your own funeral wishes and ask the cemetery you plan to use now, rather than leaving family to find out later.
Will my other cats be upset by a garden grave?
Some cats sniff or sit near the spot for a few days; many show no interest at all. It isn't harmful, as long as the grave is deep and covered so nothing is dug up. What helps surviving cats more is a steady routine: the same meals, play and litter setup as before.
