In Washington, about 79.1%[3] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.

Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Washington allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

A simple checklist for the next two days

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Redmond?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 77°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Seattle to arrange things?
