Saying goodbye to your cat in Highland

Highland, Utah

Cat cremation in Highland: how it usually works

July afternoons near the canyon mouth reach the mid-90s, while snow can settle in from November until late February. On a hot day, carry your companion's body into the coolest part of the house, away from glass doors, and aim for pickup within hours. Cold weather gives you somewhat longer, though not a whole weekend, and snow on the canyon-mouth roads can slow a provider's arrival.

The Murdock Canal Trail crosses Highland on its way between Lehi and Orem, and plenty of residents spend evenings on it with their animals, Timpanogos glowing in the late light. It's a shared public path, so ashes don't belong there. With lots this size, a quiet corner of your own garden, maybe near a favorite sunning spot, is an easy and private alternative.

Word travels in a place like Highland. You may find neighbors asking after your cat, the vet sending a card or someone at the feed store remembering the cat who sat on your porch. Let people help if you can. If your cat went missing and was found on a road, a neighbor may be the one who tells you; it's a hard way to learn, and it's fine to ask them to help you bring your cat home.

Highland's population is around 21,571, the 46th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 24 miles (38 km) away, which is where some providers serving Highland are based.

Nearby, we also have local pages for American Fork (3 miles), Lehi (4 miles, a larger centre) and Pleasant Grove (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

3,350

Highland: cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

21,571 ÷ 2.5 = 8,628 households; × 39% (cat) = 3,350. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

300

Estimated cat losses in Highland each year

How we calculated this

3,350 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 300 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

39%[1]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[2]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

46.1%[3]

The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and CareCredit (Synchrony); we only apply it to this.

Why cremation is familiar in Utah, or isn't

Only about 46.1%[3] of people in Utah are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and for cats that often means a small grave in the garden. Pet cremation is still widely available, though, and many cat owners choose it because it lets them keep their cat close even if they move. Your vet will be used to both requests.

The Utah figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Timing your cat's aftercare in Highland's climate

Highland gets both extremes: hot summers (around 95°F in July) and freezing winter lows in January, February, November and December. In summer, speed matters, so keep your cat cool and ask for prompt collection. In winter you have more time, but frozen ground can rule out a garden burial until spring.

If you're taking your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, the season changes how. In summer, cool the car first and go straight there; a parked car in Highland heats up within minutes. In winter, a cold car is fine, but allow extra time on icy roads. Either way, a towel underneath and a blanket over the top keeps things dignified.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it

US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Highland providers charge today. Use the table to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the container.

A back-of-envelope figure for Highland: about 300 cats lost each year, times the national private average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], comes to roughly $0.1 million. Our estimate, and a reason prices vary from provider to provider.

What Utah allows: burial, scattering and more

One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

What to do when your cat dies in Highland

  1. Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
  2. Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
  3. Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.
  4. Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you local options.
  5. Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; a cat's ashes fit in a small container that can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.

Memorials and keepsakes for your cat

Highland sits in the northeast corner of Utah County near the mouth of American Fork Canyon, a town of spacious lots and newer family homes about 24 miles from Salt Lake City. Practices in American Fork, Lehi and Alpine are close by. Because houses here tend to sit well back from the street on large parcels, mention any gate code or long driveway when you arrange a home collection.

Questions people ask

How does Highland's weather affect cat aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Highland, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.

Is Highland big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 3,350 Highland households keep a cat and around 300 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 21,571), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Highland?

The closest communities we cover are American Fork (about 3 miles), Lehi (about 4 miles) and Pleasant Grove (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Highland too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[3]. We show it on the Highland page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Is losing a cat common in Highland, or am I overreacting?

You're not overreacting, and you're far from alone. By our estimate, about 300 Highland families lose a cat each year, out of roughly 3,350 households with one. In one UK survey, 66.9%[7] of bereaved owners were surprised by how intense their grief was. Taking a day off, talking to friends or calling a pet-loss line are all reasonable.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?

In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[8] the communal price.
