Hideaway, Texas
Who handles cat aftercare in Hideaway
Hideaway is a gated lake-and-golf community in northern Smith County, near Lindale and roughly a twenty-minute drive from Tyler. Most of the vets and aftercare services residents use are in Tyler or Lindale. Because entry is controlled, tell any pickup service in advance how to get through the gate, or ask whether you can bring your pet to your vet instead.
Homes in Hideaway sit close to the water and the fairways, and many pets here share their days with retirees who are home most of the time. Community covenants may limit what can be buried or placed outdoors on a lot, so check with the property owners' association before planning a garden marker. An indoor urn or a shoreline scattering, with permission, avoids the question.
One advantage of a town the size of Hideaway is that people know each other. Your vet probably knows the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work, including whether a private cremation really means your cat is alone in the chamber. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own cat.
About 3,459 people live in Hideaway, which makes it the 265th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Garland, roughly 75 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hideaway run from there.
Hideaway sits within easy reach of Lindale (3 miles, a larger centre), Van (11 miles) and Mineola (12 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Hideaway; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
540
How many cat-owning households Hideaway has (estimate)
How we calculated this
3,459 ÷ 2.5 = 1,384 households; × 39% (cat) = 540. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
540 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 50 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

The local attitude to cremation
In Texas, about 55.7%[3] of people are cremated, so both traditions are familiar. Among cat owners, the split often follows the house: families with land and outdoor cats tend to bury, while those in apartments with indoor cats lean towards cremation. If you're torn, think about the next ten years rather than the next ten days. Will you stay where you are?
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hideaway, not as a count of pets.
Hideaway weather and timing
Heat also shapes the goodbye itself. If you're planning a home euthanasia in August, book a morning or evening slot when the house is cooler and your cat is more settled, and ask whether the vet can take your cat for cremation straight afterwards so you don't need to arrange a separate pickup.
Don't leave your cat in a car or on a porch in Hideaway's summer heat, even for a short while. If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, cool the car first, put your cat in a carrier or lined box on the floor behind a seat, out of the sun, and go straight there. Most clinics will meet you at the door if you call ahead.

What cat owners in Hideaway typically pay
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[5], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[6]. In Hideaway, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
Multiply it out: roughly 50 cats a year in Hideaway (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

What's allowed in Texas after your cat dies
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Texas before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Hideaway.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Hideaway's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
- If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Hideaway. They will walk you through what to do next.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, wrapped in a towel inside a lidded box, especially in warm weather.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat, like a favorite blanket, a toy mouse or a note from the children.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
- Confirm the price in writing before collection, including pickup and the container.
Keeping your cat close
Smith County summers bring August highs in the mid nineties and heavy East Texas humidity, while January nights typically bottom out around the upper thirties. In the warm months, a pet's body needs a cool indoor room and arrangements made within the same day. Cooler weather eases that pressure somewhat, though leaving things until after the weekend is rarely a good idea in any season.

Questions people ask
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[3]. We show it on the Hideaway page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Hideaway climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Where are the providers that serve Hideaway actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Garland, about 75 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hideaway and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hideaway?
The closest communities we cover are Lindale (about 3 miles), Van (about 11 miles) and Mineola (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hideaway too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does pet insurance pay for cat cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[8]. Some add-ons help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[9], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[10]. Either would cover a typical private cat cremation. Check your policy before you pay a provider in Hideaway.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[11], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[12], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[7]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
