Arranging your cat's cremation in West Mifflin

West Mifflin, Pennsylvania

Getting help for your cat in West Mifflin

July days in West Mifflin average around 83F with sticky Mon Valley air, and January nights drop near 21F, with frost a steady presence from December to March. Through the warmer months, cover your pet's body and keep it in a cool basement until it's collected that day. In winter, a detached garage or enclosed porch can keep the body cold and secure overnight.

West Mifflin sits on the high ground above the Monongahela, about 7 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh, a borough of postwar brick homes, ranches and apartment complexes with the Allegheny County Airport at its center and old steel-mill towns below along the river. Streets wind up and down the hills. For a pickup, explain how steep your driveway is and whether there's a long flight of front steps.

Many vets around West Mifflin run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.

West Mifflin's population is around 18,707, the 34th-largest of the 36 Pennsylvania communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Pittsburgh, about 7 miles (12 km) away, which is where some providers serving West Mifflin are based.

If you want to compare providers, look at Baldwin (3 miles), Bethel Park (7 miles) and Pittsburgh (7 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

2,900

Estimated cat-owning households in West Mifflin

How we calculated this

18,707 ÷ 2.5 = 7,483 households; × 39% (cat) = 2,900. Multi-pet homes count once.

A cat at home in West Mifflin

Why cremation is familiar in Pennsylvania, or isn't

About 61.3%[3] of people in Pennsylvania are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Pennsylvania figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in West Mifflin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

What the seasons mean for cat owners in West Mifflin

West Mifflin winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.

Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in West Mifflin is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February, March and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.

Cat cremation prices for West Mifflin families

US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what West Mifflin providers charge today. Use the table to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the container.

By our math, West Mifflin loses roughly 260 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

Local rules in Pennsylvania

A cat's ashes are treated very differently from a body: in most places you can keep them, move them between homes or across borders, or carry them on a plane if the container can be screened and the airline agrees. It helps to keep the crematory's certificate with the urn. Local rules bite on two things instead, a body in the ground and ashes on public land, and they're summarized for Pennsylvania below.

The rules that apply across Pennsylvania (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Pennsylvania page. West Mifflin may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

The first 48 hours, step by step

  1. If your cat is elderly or newly diagnosed, begin while there's time. A kidney, thyroid or cancer diagnosis often gives weeks or months to plan quietly.
  2. Ask your vet what the end is likely to look like for your cat's condition, and which signs mean it's time to talk again.
  3. Choose the aftercare now: private or communal cremation, and who collects your cat. Compare prices with our cost calculator while you're calm.
  4. Write your wishes down and have the clinic attach them to your cat's file, so that a locum or an out-of-hours hospital in West Mifflin knows what you've decided.
  5. Pick the place for the goodbye: at home, in the clinic's quiet room or in the garden on a warm day. Save a mobile vet's number if you'd prefer home.
  6. Spend the good days well. Treats, a warm windowsill, a brush, a camera. The point of planning ahead is that the final stretch belongs to your cat rather than to the phone.

Remembering your cat, in West Mifflin and beyond

Many West Mifflin families have shared their homes with a long line of animals, from cats on the back steps to birds and rabbits in the spare room, and the backyard is often where those memories gather. Scattering in borough or county parks may be restricted, so check before you go. Many households prefer somewhere private, like the ground under a favorite maple, or a wooden urn on a bookcase.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Pittsburgh to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Pittsburgh (roughly 7 miles from West Mifflin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Pennsylvania attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Pennsylvania human cremation rate at about 61.3%[3]. We show it on the West Mifflin page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Which nearby towns can I compare with West Mifflin?

The closest communities we cover are Baldwin (about 3 miles), Bethel Park (about 7 miles) and Pittsburgh (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve West Mifflin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the West Mifflin climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 83°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?

Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around West Mifflin often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.

Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?

Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.
