Bixby, Oklahoma
Cat aftercare in Bixby: the local picture
Many Bixby households are young families with several animals, and those left behind may pace or look for their companion. Letting them investigate the body before collection sometimes helps. When you call providers, ask if your pet will be cremated by itself, what's included in the quoted price and whether there's an extra charge for evenings or weekends. Ask about paw prints too.
Bixby's summer afternoons run into the mid-90s with river-valley humidity, so move your pet at once into the chilliest room, on tile if possible. Winter nights around 28°F are gentle, but freezing drizzle occasionally glazes the Memorial Drive bridge and back roads. Spring thunderstorms and tornado sirens can also push back a collection by several hours or more. Close the blinds on the west side.
Cats around Bixby often live partly outdoors, patrolling yards, barns and fields. That freedom has a cost: many rural and small-town cats die out of sight, on a road or somewhere they went to rest, and owners sometimes find them after a day or two. If that's happened, handle your cat gently with gloves and a towel, place them in a box, and call your vet. A private cremation is still entirely possible.
Bixby's population is around 32,766, the 12th-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover. Tulsa, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bixby run from there.
Our pages for Jenks (6 miles), Broken Arrow (9 miles, a larger centre) and Sapulpa (14 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bixby as well.
Our estimate
5,100
Estimated cat-owning households in Bixby
How we calculated this
32,766 ÷ 2.5 = 13,106 households; × 39% (cat) = 5,100. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
460
Estimated cat losses in Bixby each year
How we calculated this
5,100 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 460 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

The local attitude to cremation
In a place like Oklahoma, with a human cremation rate near 58.6%[3] and burial still common, pet cemeteries often sit alongside crematories. Some let you bury a cat's ashes in a small plot or niche rather than a full grave, which costs far less and gives you somewhere to visit. Ask local providers whether they offer this if a grave matters to you but a garden burial doesn't suit.
That Oklahoma rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Bixby only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the seasons mean for cat owners in Bixby
Weather extremes are hard on elderly cats. Many owners in Bixby see a change in the hottest weeks, when a cat with kidney disease drinks more and eats less, or in the coldest, when stiff joints make the litter box a struggle. Ask your vet which signs to watch for in each season and whether a home visit is possible if heat or ice makes the journey too much.
Outdoor cats in a place with Bixby's seasons face both kinds of risk: heat and traffic on long summer evenings, then cold, car engines and antifreeze in winter. If you lose an outdoor cat suddenly, in any season, you can still choose a private cremation and still say goodbye properly. Wrap them in a towel, place them in a box in a cool spot and call your vet in the morning if it's late.

Cat cremation costs around Bixby
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[5], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[6]. In Bixby, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
By our estimate Bixby families would spend around $0.1 million a year if every one of the roughly 460 cats lost here were privately cremated at clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], the national average. Competition for that work is real, so quotes differ.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Oklahoma
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Oklahoma, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about burying your cat in the garden, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes.
The official Oklahoma local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Bixby.
The Oklahoma page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Bixby's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Bixby. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Bixby lies along the Arkansas River about 16 miles south of downtown Tulsa, a fast-growing Tulsa County suburb that still has fertile river-bottom farmland at its edges, including sod and vegetable fields. Newer subdivisions with brick homes and fenced yards fill much of the city, while older houses cluster near Main Street. Tulsa-area providers reach Bixby readily, and scheduling a pickup at your house is seldom difficult.

Questions people ask
Is Bixby big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 5,100 Bixby households keep a cat and around 460 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 32,766), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Bixby page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 58.6%[3] of Oklahoma residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Bixby?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bixby?
Usually yes. Jenks is about 6 miles away, Broken Arrow is about 9 miles away and Sapulpa is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Bixby?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
