Cat aftercare in Kent: the local picture
The Portage Hike and Bike Trail and the riverside parks along the Cuyahoga give Kent residents plenty of green space. Scattering ashes in public parks usually requires permission, but a photo taken by the river or a smooth river rock on a windowsill can keep the memory close. Student renters often choose compact urns or jewelry that move easily from one apartment to the next.
Kent is a Portage County college town built around Kent State University, about 12 miles east of Akron and 30 miles southeast of Cleveland. The Cuyahoga River runs through its compact, walkable downtown, and neighborhoods mix older frame houses, student rentals and newer homes on the outskirts. Help could come from a Kent clinic, a Portage County service or a crew driving over from Akron, so ask about pickup and timing.
If the crematory serving Kent only collects from your vet once a week, you may need to keep your cat at home for a few days. Wrapped in a towel, then sealed in a strong plastic bag, a cat keeps well in a chest freezer, and your vet may offer theirs. It sounds hard, but it's common practice in rural areas and doesn't affect cremation or any keepsakes you'd like.
Kent's population is around 27,737, the 53rd-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Cleveland, about 30 miles (48 km) away, which is where some providers serving Kent are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Tallmadge (4 miles), Stow (4 miles) and Streetsboro (6 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
4,350
Kent: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
27,737 ÷ 2.5 = 11,095 households; × 39% (cat) = 4,350. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
390
Estimated cat losses in Kent each year
How we calculated this
4,350 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 390 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

The NFDA projected Ohio's cremation rate at 59.1% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

Why cremation is familiar in Ohio, or isn't
About 59.1%[3] of people in Ohio are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Kent tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather, timing and your cat in Kent
Cold weather brings its own risks for outdoor cats. They look for warmth under car hoods and in engine bays, so a quick knock on the hood before starting the car is a common habit in places like Kent. Antifreeze is another winter danger: it tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in January, February, March and December, tell your vet what you know; they may want to check the cause.
With average lows at or below freezing for about 4 months a year, Kent has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.

Cat cremation costs around Kent
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[5], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[6]. In Kent, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
A back-of-envelope figure for Kent: about 390 cats lost each year, times the national private average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], comes to roughly $0.1 million. Our estimate, and a reason prices vary from provider to provider.

Burial and scattering rules for Ohio
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Ohio says about burial and scattering.
The official Ohio local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Kent.
The rules that apply across Ohio (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Ohio page. Kent may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If you find your cat outdoors, bring gloves, a towel and a box. Lift them gently onto the towel and carry them home or to your car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or a neighbor found them, ask a vet to scan for a microchip. Most clinics will do it quickly.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room in the house while you get hold of your vet or a crematory covering Kent.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and let the neighbors and friends who were out looking know, so nobody keeps searching.
- Give yourself some grace. Sudden losses, especially of outdoor cats, bring guilt that isn't deserved. Cats who roam are living the life they chose.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Kent summers reach about 84F and January lows average around 20F, with snow and gray skies through much of winter. If your pet dies on a hot day, a cool basement floor and a covered body will help until pickup. Frozen ground in winter and rental leases in many student neighborhoods both make yard burial difficult, so cremation is common in Kent.

Questions people ask
Does the Kent climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is cremation common in Ohio?
For people, yes: about 59.1%[3] of Ohio deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kent follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kent?
Usually yes. Tallmadge is about 4 miles away, Stow is about 4 miles away and Streetsboro is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Kent big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 4,350 Kent households keep a cat and around 390 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 27,737), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How many cats are there in Kent?
By our estimate, about 4,350 households in Kent have at least one cat, and around 390 cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national cat ownership and lifespan figures; the method is shown on this page. Many homes have more than one cat, so the true number of cats is higher.
Should my other cats see the cat who died?
Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.
