Chillicothe, Ohio
Getting help for your cat in Chillicothe
Chillicothe, the Ross County seat and Ohio's first state capital, sits on the Scioto River about 43 miles south of Columbus, where flat farmland gives way to the wooded Appalachian foothills. Brick and frame homes line compact streets in town, while outlying houses sit on long rural lots. Tell any provider how far out your place is, because hill roads and gravel lanes add real travel time.
Chillicothe summers turn hot and sticky, and July can push past 85F, so cooling your pet's body can't wait: bare floorboards, bags of frozen peas inside a dish towel, and curtains drawn. Winter is gentler than in the state's northern counties, averaging 23F after dark in January, with deep cold seldom lasting beyond February, though icy ridge roads can still slow a pickup.
Many vets around Chillicothe run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.
Chillicothe's population is around 21,815, the 77th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Chillicothe are based about 43 miles away in Columbus, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Lancaster (34 miles), Grove City (37 miles, a larger centre) and Pickerington (40 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation in Ohio, and what it means for cat owners
In a place like Ohio, with a human cremation rate near 59.1%[3] and burial still common, pet cemeteries often sit alongside crematories. Some let you bury a cat's ashes in a small plot or niche rather than a full grave, which costs far less and gives you somewhere to visit. Ask local providers whether they offer this if a grave matters to you but a garden burial doesn't suit.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Chillicothe tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather, timing and your cat in Chillicothe
Chillicothe winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.
Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Chillicothe is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.

Cat cremation costs around Chillicothe
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[5], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[6]. In Chillicothe, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 300 cats lost in Chillicothe each year were privately cremated at the national average of about clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], local families would spend around $0.1 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

What's allowed in Ohio after your cat dies

What to do when your cat dies in Chillicothe
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Chillicothe. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.
Remembering your cat in Chillicothe
Wooded hills rise around Chillicothe, including Great Seal State Park just outside town, and the Scioto's banks draw residents for fishing and quiet afternoons. Families who shared those places with a companion sometimes hope to remember them there. Ohio state parks set their own terms for ashes, so ask first, or look to your own acreage, where nobody's sign-off is needed.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Columbus to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Columbus (roughly 43 miles from Chillicothe) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Chillicothe climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Chillicothe page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.1%[3] of Ohio residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many cats die in Chillicothe each year?
Our estimate is around 300. It comes from Chillicothe's population (about 21,815), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 3,400 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Could antifreeze or a car engine have caused my outdoor cat's death?
It's possible in winter. Antifreeze tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic, and cats sometimes shelter in engine bays for warmth. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in cold weather, tell your vet what you know before cremation; they can advise whether an examination is worthwhile. Warning neighbors about spills can protect other cats.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
