Aurora, Ohio
Getting help for your cat in Aurora
Wooded properties and long, curving driveways can make an Aurora house hard to find after dark, particularly once snow covers the house numbers. When you call, mention landmarks, gate codes or the color of the mailbox. Then ask each service to itemize its quote, including the collection trip out to Aurora, the type of cremation, the urn and the delivery date for the ashes.
Aurora runs a touch cooler than Cleveland, with July afternoons around 81°F and winter nights near 16°F, and lake-effect snow can start in November. In the cold months a mudroom or garage floor stays cold enough until someone arrives. In summer, rest your companion on a sheet where the AC reaches and try to book collection within twenty-four hours. Close curtains on sunny sides.
Home burial is common in smaller communities, and for a cat it's physically easy: a small grave in a garden you own. It's worth thinking about whether you'll stay in the property and whether foxes, coyotes or dogs are likely to dig; a cat's grave needs to be deep enough to discourage them. Some families choose cremation and bury the ashes instead, which avoids the problem and keeps the option of moving them later.
Aurora is home to about 18,014 people, the 101st-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Cleveland, roughly 23 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Aurora run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Streetsboro (4 miles), Twinsburg (6 miles) and Hudson (7 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Aurora routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
2,800
How many cat-owning households Aurora has (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,014 ÷ 2.5 = 7,206 households; × 39% (cat) = 2,800. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

Aurora families who lose a cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
2,800 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 250 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
39%[1]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
59.1%[3]
The NFDA projected Ohio's cremation rate at 59.1% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation traditions in Ohio
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Ohio, at about 59.1%[3], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll see both among cat owners. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, and a cat's small amount of ash makes cremation easy to live with. Neither is more proper than the other.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Aurora tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather, timing and your cat in Aurora
If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself in winter, the cold car helps. Lay your cat in a lined box or carrier on the back seat and drive carefully. In January, when lows average about 16°F, check the roads before you set off, and don't feel you have to go that day if conditions are poor. Your cat will keep safely in the cold.
Aurora winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.

Cat cremation costs around Aurora
One pet-care company estimates that over a lifetime a cat costs a US household about $32,170[5], so the cremation is a small line in a long story. Even so, it's the one bill you pay while grieving, which is why it helps to know the numbers first. In Aurora, private cremation, collection and a simple container usually add up to a few hundred dollars at most; the table shows the typical pieces.
Multiply it out: roughly 250 cats a year in Aurora (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

Rules worth knowing in Ohio
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Ohio allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

Start with the Ohio rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Aurora's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if you have them. Some sniff and walk away, some lie down beside their companion. Either is normal.
- Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this. What comes back from a cat is small enough to keep in a modest container on a shelf until you know what you want.
Keeping your cat close
Aurora is a leafy Portage County city about 23 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland, known for wooded lots, small lakes, the outlet mall and the site of the old Geauga Lake park. Homes are mostly spacious single-family houses on large lots, many backing onto trees. There's usually room to rest your pet quietly at home, and providers from Solon, Hudson, Twinsburg and Kent all reach Aurora.

Questions people ask
Does the Aurora climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Aurora page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.1%[3] of Ohio residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Aurora actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Cleveland, about 23 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Aurora and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is Aurora big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 2,800 Aurora households keep a cat and around 250 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 18,014), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[7] the communal price.
Is it better to bury a barn cat or have them cremated?
Either is fine. Many families near Aurora bury farm and barn cats on their own land, deep enough that foxes or coyotes can't disturb the grave and away from wells and streams. Communal cremation through your vet is an affordable alternative, and a private cremation makes sense for a cat you were especially close to or would like to keep if you ever move.
