Apex, North Carolina
Who handles cat aftercare in Apex
Apex has grown fast from a small railroad town into one of the busier suburbs of western Wake County, about 14 miles from downtown Raleigh. Most families here live in newer subdivisions with HOA rules, so backyard burial may not be allowed even when you own the lot. Check your covenants before deciding, and if burial is out, cremation with ashes returned is the simplest route.
Downtown Apex keeps its old Salem Street storefronts and depot, and many residents walk there with family on weekends. That small-town feel shows in how people mark a pet's death: a photo shared with neighbors, a stone in a flower bed, a donation to a local rescue. There is no single right way; choose what fits your household and your yard.
Barn cats and farm cats are part of life around Apex, and many families care for several at once. When one dies, a quiet burial on the land is the usual choice, and a perfectly good one. If a particular cat was closer to you than the others, though, a private cremation lets you keep them, and communal cremation through your vet is an affordable option for cats you fed but never handled.
With roughly 80,419 residents, Apex is the 14th-largest of the 64 North Carolina communities we cover. Raleigh, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Apex run from there.
Our pages for Cary (5 miles, a larger centre), Holly Springs (5 miles) and Morrisville (8 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Apex as well.
Our estimate
12,500
How many cat-owning households Apex has (estimate)
How we calculated this
80,419 ÷ 2.5 = 32,168 households; × 39% (cat) = 12,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
12,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,100 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

The local attitude to cremation
Human cremation sits at around 57.3%[3] in North Carolina, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[5] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.
The North Carolina percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Apex, not as a count of pets.
Seasons, collection and burial in Apex
In Apex, July highs average about 91°F. Older cats, especially those with kidney disease, dehydrate quickly in that kind of heat, and many owners notice a senior cat eating less and sleeping more through the summer. If you're weighing timing, tell your vet what you're seeing. A goodbye in the cool of the morning, in your cat's usual spot, can be gentler for everyone.
Don't leave your cat in a car or on a porch in Apex's summer heat, even for a short while. If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, cool the car first, put your cat in a carrier or lined box on the floor behind a seat, out of the sun, and go straight there. Most clinics will meet you at the door if you call ahead.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Most Apex families pay somewhere in the ranges below. Private cremation for a pet up to 30 lb, which covers almost every cat, typically runs $100 to $175, and communal about $45 to $75[6]. If you'd like a vet to come to the house, cat euthanasia averages about $359 at home against $158 in a clinic[4], roughly 2.27x[7] the price.
By our math, Apex loses roughly 1,100 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0.2 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

Rules worth knowing in North Carolina
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for North Carolina before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.

We keep North Carolina's burial and scattering rules in one place: the North Carolina rules summary. Before a home burial in Apex, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Step by step in Apex
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a small clipping of fur from the chest or behind a back leg, shed whiskers from their bed, their collar or tag.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other detail, the cost most of all, follows from this one decision.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
July heat in Apex reaches the low 90s, and pollen coats everything each spring, but the climate rarely complicates aftercare beyond keeping your pet cool. A towel, a cool interior room and a call to a provider are usually enough for the first hours. Because the town sits near Raleigh, Cary and Durham, you will likely have several providers to compare on price and pickup.

Questions people ask
Does the Apex climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Apex?
Usually yes. Cary is about 5 miles away, Holly Springs is about 5 miles away and Morrisville is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many cats die in Apex each year?
Our estimate is around 1,100. It comes from Apex's population (about 80,419), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 12,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Will I have to travel to Raleigh to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Raleigh (roughly 14 miles from Apex) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[8] the communal price.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
