Saying goodbye to your cat in Paramus

Paramus, New Jersey

Getting help for your cat in Paramus

Paramus is known across the region for the malls and big-box stores that line Routes 4 and 17, but behind the highways most of the borough is quiet streets of single-family homes with driveways and yards. That layout makes pickups simple. Just tell the provider which exit or side street to use, since the highway ramps and U-turns can confuse a driver unfamiliar with the area.

Van Saun County Park, with its small zoo and open lawns, and the Saddle River County Park path along the borough's western edge are where many Paramus families spend weekend hours outdoors. Both are county land, so scattering needs permission. Many households plant a shrub in the yard or keep an urn inside instead, somewhere the whole family passes each day.

Cats around Paramus often live partly outdoors, patrolling yards, barns and fields. That freedom has a cost: many rural and small-town cats die out of sight, on a road or somewhere they went to rest, and owners sometimes find them after a day or two. If that's happened, handle your cat gently with gloves and a towel, place them in a box, and call your vet. A private cremation is still entirely possible.

Paramus's population is around 26,723, the 35th-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Yonkers, about 11 miles (17 km) away, which is where some providers serving Paramus are based.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Fair Lawn (3 miles), Ridgewood (3 miles) and Elmwood Park (4 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

4,150

How many cat-owning households Paramus has (estimate)

How we calculated this

26,723 ÷ 2.5 = 10,689 households; × 39% (cat) = 4,150. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

How we calculated this

4,150 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 370 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Why cremation is familiar in New Jersey, or isn't

Human cremation sits at around 56.5%[3] in New Jersey, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[5] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.

For the New Jersey figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Paramus rather than as pet data.

How Paramus's weather affects the first few hours

With no real extremes of heat or cold, Paramus is one of the easier places to plan a home goodbye. A cat can be put to sleep in a sunny spot by the window or on a garden bench on a calm afternoon. Ask the vet whether they're happy to work where your cat is most relaxed, have a blanket ready and let the other cats in the house wander in if they want to.

Even in a mild climate, the warmest weeks deserve some care: keep your cat indoors, out of the sun and cool until collection, ideally in a lidded box so other pets can't disturb them.

What cat owners in Paramus typically pay

Most Paramus families pay somewhere in the ranges below. Private cremation for a pet up to 30 lb, which covers almost every cat, typically runs $100 to $175, and communal about $45 to $75[6]. If you'd like a vet to come to the house, cat euthanasia averages about $359 at home against $158 in a clinic[4], roughly 2.27x[7] the price.

By our math, Paramus loses roughly 370 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0.1 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

What's allowed in New Jersey after your cat dies

One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

To find your county or city office in New Jersey, start with the official New Jersey local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the New Jersey level first; our New Jersey rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Paramus or your HOA adds anything.

A simple checklist for the next two days

  1. If your cat died while you were away, with a sitter, a neighbor or at a boarding cattery, phone the person who was caring for them first. Ask what happened and where your cat is right now.
  2. Ask them to keep your cat cool: covered with a towel in a lidded box in the coolest part of the house, or taken to the nearest vet if the house will be warm.
  3. Give your vet permission by phone or email to hold your cat until you're home. Most clinics near Paramus will accept a cat from a sitter if you call ahead.
  4. Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. If you do, the clinic can hold them for a few days; if the trip home is long, a photo from the vet can be a gentle substitute.
  5. Arrange the cremation remotely if you need to. Providers take instructions and payment by phone, and the ashes can wait at the clinic for you.
  6. Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.

Keeping your cat close

Traffic is a real factor in Paramus, especially on Saturdays and during the holiday shopping season, so allow time when a provider is on the way. On Sundays, when Bergen County's blue laws close most retail, the roads are noticeably quieter. Summer peaks around 85F in July, so rest your pet somewhere cool inside, on a waterproof sheet with gel packs or bags of frozen peas against the body, until collection.

Questions people ask

How do New Jersey attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New Jersey human cremation rate at about 56.5%[3]. We show it on the Paramus page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Paramus?

January and February: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

How many cat owners live in Paramus?

By our estimate, about 4,150 households in Paramus have at least one cat, and around 370 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 26,723, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Will I have to travel to Yonkers to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Yonkers (roughly 11 miles from Paramus) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

My local vet in Paramus is small. Can they still arrange cremation?

Almost certainly. Small practices usually work with a crematory in a larger centre and have a regular collection day, and your cat is kept in a cold room at the clinic until then. Ask which crematory they use, whether private cremation is available, what it costs for a cat and roughly how long the ashes take to come back.

Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?

Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Paramus often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.
