Ferguson, Missouri
How cat cremation works in Ferguson
Ferguson is an older inner-ring suburb in north St. Louis County, about 10 miles from downtown and just a few minutes from Lambert airport. Its streets of brick bungalows and modest two-story houses mean small yards rather than acreage. Pet cremation services here are based around the wider county, so when you phone one, ask plainly whether they collect from a residence, what the trip adds, and what the full price comes to.
January-Wabash Park, with its small lake and loop path, is where plenty of Ferguson residents take their animals outdoors on mild afternoons. Scattering ashes there isn't appropriate, but sitting on a bench by the water can be a calm place to decide what comes next. For the compact lots in town, a flat stone near the front steps or a container garden often feels right.
Cats around Ferguson often live partly outdoors, patrolling yards, barns and fields. That freedom has a cost: many rural and small-town cats die out of sight, on a road or somewhere they went to rest, and owners sometimes find them after a day or two. If that's happened, handle your cat gently with gloves and a towel, place them in a box, and call your vet. A private cremation is still entirely possible.
About 17,953 people live in Ferguson, which makes it the 42nd-largest of the 43 Missouri communities we cover. St. Louis, roughly 10 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ferguson run from there.
Our pages for Florissant (4 miles, a larger centre), University City (6 miles) and Hazelwood (6 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Ferguson as well.
Our estimate

How Missouri thinks about cremation
Cremation is chosen for about 59.8%[3] of people in Missouri, but plenty of households here have always buried their cats under a favorite tree. Both are loving choices. We'd only suggest choosing on purpose rather than by default: find out what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your cat, your home and your plans.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Missouri figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Ferguson tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Ferguson weather and timing
A climate like Ferguson's gives you natural moments for a memorial. Families often choose a spring or fall day to scatter ashes or bury an urn, avoiding the heat of July and the frozen ground of January, February and December. There's no deadline. Ashes keep indefinitely in a sealed container, so wait for the day that feels right, perhaps your cat's adoption anniversary.
If you'd like to bury your cat's ashes rather than their body, you can do it whenever the ground allows. Many families in places with seasons like Ferguson's keep the urn at home through winter and hold a small burial or scattering when the weather turns mild.

What cat owners in Ferguson typically pay
Most Ferguson families pay somewhere in the ranges below. Private cremation for a pet up to 30 lb, which covers almost every cat, typically runs $100 to $175, and communal about $45 to $75[5]. If you'd like a vet to come to the house, cat euthanasia averages about $359 at home against $158 in a clinic[4], roughly 2.27x[6] the price.
Put another way: around 250 cats die in Ferguson each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

What's allowed in Missouri after your cat dies
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Missouri allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
Missouri keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ferguson.
The Missouri page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Ferguson's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Take a breath. The next hour asks nothing of you. When a cat dies at home, set them down on a towel, gently close the eyes if they'll stay shut, and fold the legs under as though they're curled up asleep.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (after hours, an emergency clinic will do) and describe what has happened. If you have any doubt, they can confirm your cat has died, and they'll tell you how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Keeping your cat close
Ferguson summers bring July highs around 90F and heavy humidity, so move your pet's body to the coolest part of the home within an hour or so: a basement slab or tile floor, a blanket underneath, frozen packs covered with a dish towel. With lows in the mid-20s and freezing weather from December into February, digging in a small city yard is often not realistic until the spring thaw.

Questions people ask
How do Missouri attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Missouri human cremation rate at about 59.8%[3]. We show it on the Ferguson page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many cats die in Ferguson each year?
Our estimate is around 250. It comes from Ferguson's population (about 17,953), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 2,800 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Will I have to travel to St. Louis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Louis (roughly 10 miles from Ferguson) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Ferguson climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Missouri?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Missouri, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Do crematories charge extra to collect from a rural address near Ferguson?
Some do. Many include collection within a set distance and charge per mile beyond it, or add a flat fee for remote or out-of-hours trips, and for a cat that fee can exceed the cremation itself. Ask for the collection price separately. Driving your cat to your vet or the crematory in a carrier is the easiest way to avoid it.
