Savage, Minnesota
How cat cremation works in Savage
Winter here means January lows near 9F and frozen ground from November well into March, so an unheated garage is a reliable cold spot if a pet dies overnight; put the body in a closed box or tote. Summer highs near 83F bring the opposite problem. Choose the coolest room, slide a folded towel underneath, and lay cloth-covered ice against the torso, then book the earliest pickup available.
Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, with its wooded hills and ponds, fills the city's southern edge, and the river bottoms along the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge sit to the north. Both are public land, so scattering there requires permission. Savage families more often set a little urn among the houseplants, or lay a small flat stone in the back garden where a cat liked to doze in the afternoon sun.
If your cat is old or ill and you live in or near Savage, a phone call now is easier than one later. Ask your vet which crematory they use, what private cremation costs for a cat, how long the ashes take to come back and whether a home visit is possible. Senior cats often decline quietly, with weight loss and more sleep, so having those answers written down lets you spend the last days with your cat rather than on the phone.
Savage is home to about 32,970 people, the 30th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Minneapolis, about 16 miles (26 km) away, which is where some providers serving Savage are based.
Savage sits within easy reach of Burnsville (4 miles), Prior Lake (4 miles) and Bloomington (5 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Savage; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation traditions in Minnesota
About 68.5%[3] of people in Minnesota are cremated, a figure that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has followed the same curve. More cat owners now bring the ashes home than bury their cat in the garden, especially in towns and suburbs where yards are small or rented, and where an indoor cat never really used the garden anyway.
That Minnesota rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Savage only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How Savage's weather affects the first few hours
With average lows at or below freezing for about 5 months a year, Savage has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.
Some families in cold places cremate first and bury the ashes once the ground thaws. It's a lovely compromise for a cat: the small urn comes home now, and in spring you plant it under a shrub, a patch of catnip or the tree your cat used to watch the birds from.

What cat cremation costs in Savage
One pet-care company estimates that over a lifetime a cat costs a US household about $32,170[5], so the cremation is a small line in a long story. Even so, it's the one bill you pay while grieving, which is why it helps to know the numbers first. In Savage, private cremation, collection and a simple container usually add up to a few hundred dollars at most; the table shows the typical pieces.
Multiply it out: roughly 460 cats a year in Savage (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

What Minnesota allows: burial, scattering and more
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Minnesota allows for burial and scattering.

A simple checklist for the next two days
- If you find your cat outdoors, take a box, a towel and a pair of gloves with you. Ease them onto the towel, then carry them back to the house or the car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or someone nearby found them, any vet can check for a microchip. It takes a clinic only a minute or two.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room in the house while you get hold of your vet or a crematory covering Savage.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and a complete figure that covers either pickup or bringing your cat in.
- Update the microchip record and let the neighbors and friends who were out looking know, so nobody keeps searching.
- Give yourself some grace. When an outdoor cat dies suddenly, owners often blame themselves without cause. A cat that roams is doing exactly what it wanted to do.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Savage lies in Scott County on the south bank of the Minnesota River, about 16 miles from downtown Minneapolis. Highway 13 and County Road 42 carry most of the traffic, and the city is largely family subdivisions from the last few decades, with older streets near the historic core. Providers based in Burnsville, Shakopee and the wider southwest metro commonly cover Savage, so asking two of them for an itemized quote is quick to do.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Savage actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Minneapolis, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Savage and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Savage?
Usually yes. Burnsville is about 4 miles away, Prior Lake is about 4 miles away and Bloomington is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Savage's weather affect cat aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Savage, with average highs around 83°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is cremation common in Minnesota?
For people, yes: about 68.5%[3] of Minnesota deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Savage follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Savage?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Savage?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[7]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Minneapolis, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
