Eagan, Minnesota
Getting help for your cat in Eagan
Eagan spreads over the northern part of Dakota County about 10 miles south of Saint Paul, edged on the north by the Minnesota River bluffs and cut by I-35E, I-494 and Cedar Avenue. Most of it was farmland until the 1970s, and today townhome associations, apartments and single-family streets sit side by side. If you live in a townhome, tell the collection service where visitors are allowed to park and which door to use.
Lebanon Hills Regional Park, more than 2,000 acres of wooded hills, ponds and lakes, sits across the southern part of the city and into Apple Valley, and plenty of Eagan residents have spent years on its trails. It is run by Dakota County, so the county parks office is the one to ask about ashes. Scattering in your own garden needs nobody's approval, and you can do it whenever you feel ready.
Barn cats and farm cats are part of life around Eagan, and many families care for several at once. When one dies, a quiet burial on the land is the usual choice, and a perfectly good one. If a particular cat was closer to you than the others, though, a private cremation lets you keep them, and communal cremation through your vet is an affordable option for cats you fed but never handled.
Eagan's population is around 67,109, the 13th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Eagan are based about 10 miles away in Saint Paul, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Inver Grove Heights (5 miles), Apple Valley (5 miles) and Rosemount (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Eagan as well.
Our estimate
10,500
Eagan: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
67,109 ÷ 2.5 = 26,844 households; × 39% (cat) = 10,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
940
Eagan families who lose a cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 940 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

The NFDA projected Minnesota's cremation rate at 68.5% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

The local attitude to cremation
About 68.5%[3] of people in Minnesota choose cremation, and the share keeps climbing as families move and live further apart. That's one of the most common reasons cat owners choose it too: a small urn travels, a garden grave doesn't. If there's already a spot on family land where other cats are buried, though, burying the ashes there can give you both.
That Minnesota rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Eagan only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons, collection and burial in Eagan
Snow and ice can delay collection, especially on rural roads. The upside is time: in an unheated room, garage or porch that stays near freezing, a cat can safely wait a day or two. Wrap your cat in a blanket, place them in a sturdy lidded box and make sure other pets and wildlife can't reach them.
Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Eagan is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February, March, November and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.

Cat cremation prices for Eagan families
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.
By our estimate Eagan families would spend around $0.2 million a year if every one of the roughly 940 cats lost here were privately cremated at clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], the national average. Competition for that work is real, so quotes differ.

Rules worth knowing in Minnesota
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Minnesota before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
To find your county or city office in Minnesota, start with the official Minnesota local government directory.
For Minnesota's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Minnesota guide. Local rules in Eagan can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If you find your cat outdoors, take a box, a towel and a pair of gloves with you. Ease them onto the towel, then carry them back to the house or the car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or a neighbor found them, ask a vet to scan for a microchip. Most clinics will do it quickly.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room at home until you've spoken to your vet or a crematory that serves Eagan.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and tell anyone who helped you look for your cat, so they can stop searching.
- Give yourself some grace. When an outdoor cat dies suddenly, owners often blame themselves without cause. A cat that roams is doing exactly what it wanted to do.
Remembering your cat in Eagan
Very small companions need their own planning. A hamster, parakeet or betta can rest in a small box lined with paper towels in the coolest room, or be kept overnight in the fridge inside a zipped plastic bag. Ask any provider how much ash to expect back, since tiny bodies leave only a pinch. In winter Eagan's January lows near 9F make a garage cold enough, too.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Eagan actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Saint Paul, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Eagan and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How does Eagan's weather affect cat aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Eagan, with average highs around 83°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Eagan page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 68.5%[3] of Minnesota residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many cat owners live in Eagan?
By our estimate, about 10,500 households in Eagan have at least one cat, and around 940 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 67,109, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
