Livonia, Michigan
Cat cremation in Livonia: how it usually works
Livonia is a large Wayne County suburb about 17 miles west of downtown Detroit, laid out on the mile-road grid between Five Mile and Eight Mile and crossed by I-96 and I-275. Most of the city was built in the 1950s and 1960s, so streets are lined with brick ranches and bungalows on modest lots, nearly all with a driveway and many with a detached garage. Providers covering western Wayne County reach Livonia easily; ask each what it charges for a house call.
Hines Park follows the Middle Rouge River along Livonia's southern edge, and its wooded drive and paths are familiar to generations of local families and their animals. January nights hover around 19F and the cold holds into March, so a detached garage stays cold for much of the winter. July brings highs in the mid-80s and sticky Great Lakes humidity; in a Livonia ranch, the basement is usually the coolest place to keep your pet until pickup.
Cats around Livonia often live partly outdoors, patrolling yards, barns and fields. That freedom has a cost: many rural and small-town cats die out of sight, on a road or somewhere they went to rest, and owners sometimes find them after a day or two. If that's happened, handle your cat gently with gloves and a towel, place them in a box, and call your vet. A private cremation is still entirely possible.
Livonia is home to about 92,603 people, the 8th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Detroit, about 17 miles (28 km) away, which is where some providers serving Livonia are based.
Livonia sits within easy reach of Garden City (5 miles), Westland (5 miles) and Dearborn Heights (6 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Livonia; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
14,500
Livonia: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
92,603 ÷ 2.5 = 37,041 households; × 39% (cat) = 14,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,300
Livonia families who lose a cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
14,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
39%[1]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
69.5%[3]
The NFDA projected Michigan's cremation rate at 69.5% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Cremation traditions in Michigan
Human cremation sits at around 69.5%[3] in Michigan, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[5] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.
That Michigan rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Livonia only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Timing your cat's aftercare in Livonia's climate
Cold weather brings its own risks for outdoor cats. They look for warmth under car hoods and in engine bays, so a quick knock on the hood before starting the car is a common habit in places like Livonia. Antifreeze is another winter danger: it tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in January, February, March and December, tell your vet what you know; they may want to check the cause.
Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Livonia is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February, March and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.

What cat cremation costs in Livonia
In the US, private cremation for a cat averages about $180[4], one of the lowest prices on any crematory's list because cats sit in the lightest weight band. What you pay in Livonia depends mostly on everything around the cremation: home collection, an after-hours call, a decorative urn or a paw print. The table shows typical national figures.
Multiply it out: roughly 1,300 cats a year in Livonia (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0.2 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

What's allowed in Michigan after your cat dies
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Michigan and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
The official Michigan local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Livonia.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Michigan level first; our Michigan rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Livonia or your HOA adds anything.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- Take a breath. The next hour asks nothing of you. When a cat dies at home, set them down on a towel, gently close the eyes if they'll stay shut, and fold the legs under as though they're curled up asleep.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket lined with their own blanket, in the coolest room, with the door closed so other pets can't disturb them.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other detail, the cost most of all, follows from this one decision.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Remembering your cat, in Livonia and beyond
Livonia is a settled, family-oriented city where people often stay in the same house for decades, and many pets live their whole lives in one backyard. Some owners have the ashes returned and set them on a shelf; others prefer a garden memorial in the yard they shared. County parkland along the Rouge is regulated, so contact the parks office before scattering ashes there.

Questions people ask
How many cat owners live in Livonia?
By our estimate, about 14,500 households in Livonia have at least one cat, and around 1,300 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 92,603, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Livonia?
Usually yes. Garden City is about 5 miles away, Westland is about 5 miles away and Dearborn Heights is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Livonia actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Detroit, about 17 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Livonia and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Livonia page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[3] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury my cat's ashes in winter when the ground is frozen?
Many families in cold places keep the urn at home through winter and bury the ashes in spring, once the ground thaws. Ashes don't need to be buried quickly. A cat's urn needs only a small hole, so almost any spot you love, under a shrub or beside a garden path, will work when the weather turns.
Can my cat stay in the garage until the crematory can collect in winter?
In cold weather, an unheated garage or porch is a reasonable place for a day or two. Wrap your cat in a blanket, place them in a sturdy lidded box and make sure other pets and wildlife can't reach them. If daytime temperatures climb well above freezing, call for collection sooner.
