Cat Cremation in Louisiana: what to know
The biggest cost differences for cat owners in Louisiana come from three things: private or communal cremation, how your cat gets to the crematory and any keepsakes you add. A home collection after hours can cost almost as much as the cremation of a cat itself. Knowing that in advance lets you decide where to save and where to spend.
Whether you're in one of the larger cities like New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport or a small town, the questions to ask are the same: is it private, how is my cat identified, what's the total price in writing and when will the ashes come home? This guide explains the picture for Louisiana, and each city page goes deeper.
We cover 17 communities in Louisiana, from New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Louisiana: summer highs reach about 95°F in Shreveport, while winter lows average 36°F in Ruston. In 0% of the Louisiana communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 17 communities in Louisiana on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a cat. Households with several pets count once.

Local habits around cremation and burial
With about 46.4%[1] of people cremated, Louisiana is a place where burial is still common. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and a longer trip for your cat. It doesn't mean worse care. Ask your vet which crematory they use, how far away it is and whether private cremation for a cat is available, so you know what to expect.
We take the Louisiana percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Cat cremation prices for Louisiana families
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[2], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[3]. In Louisiana, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
In the US, private cremation for a cat averages about $180[4], one of the lowest prices on any crematory's list because cats sit in the lightest weight band. What you pay in Louisiana depends mostly on everything around the cremation: home collection, an after-hours call, a decorative urn or a paw print. The table shows typical national figures.
| Service | Typical US price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Communal cremation (pets up to 30 lb) | $45 to $75[5] | No ashes returned |
| Private cremation (pets up to 30 lb) | $100 to $175[5] | Ashes returned in a simple container |
| Cat cremation, national average | about $180[4] | CareCredit 2025 study |
| Euthanasia at the clinic | about $158[4] | Priced separately from cremation |
| Euthanasia at home | about $359[4] | Evenings and weekends often cost more |
| Clay paw print / fur clipping | about $10 / $5[6] | Example add-on prices from one provider |
| Source | CareCredit cost guide | Excludes pickup and urn upgrades |

Burial, ashes and the rules in Louisiana
A cat's ashes are treated very differently from a body: in most places you can keep them, move them between homes or across borders, or carry them on a plane if the container can be screened and the airline agrees. It helps to keep the crematory's certificate with the urn. Local rules bite on two things instead, a body in the ground and ashes on public land, and they're summarized for Louisiana below.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Louisiana local government directory.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
- If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Louisiana. They will walk you through what to do next.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, wrapped in a towel inside a lidded box, especially in warm weather.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat, like a favorite blanket, a toy mouse or a note from the children.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
- Confirm the price in writing before collection, including pickup and the container.
Keeping your cat close
Many Louisiana families keep their cat's ashes indoors, near a window or the chair their cat claimed, rather than scattering them outdoors, especially for an indoor cat whose whole world was the home. A cat's ashes fit in a small urn or a keepsake box, and some people move a pinch into a locket so they can carry it.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my cat's ashes in Louisiana?
Your own garden is the simplest place, and private land with the owner's permission is fine too. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules. Because a cat's ashes are only a cup or so, many families scatter a little and keep the rest in a small urn or keepsake at home.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Louisiana?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
How many communities do you cover in Louisiana?
We currently have local cat cremation guides for 17 communities in Louisiana, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
How much does cat cremation cost in Louisiana?
Prices across Louisiana depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Louisiana?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Louisiana?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
