Hammond, Indiana
Who handles cat aftercare in Hammond
Hammond sits in Lake County at Indiana's northwest corner, right against the Illinois line and about 19 miles from downtown Chicago. It's part of what locals call the Region, with older brick and frame houses on compact lots, alleys behind many blocks and heavy industry along the lakefront and rail lines. Pickup is usually quick to arrange; tell the crew if the alley or back gate is easier than the front door.
Lake Michigan shapes Hammond's weather, bringing lake-effect snow in winter and sticky summers that top out in the mid-80s. On a warm day the basement is often the coolest spot in the house, and a few ice packs inside a towel will help. From December to March, a cold garage or enclosed back porch keeps the body safe until the provider arrives.
Families in and around Hammond often combine local and regional help: the goodbye happens at home or with the local vet, and the cremation itself takes place in a larger centre such as Chicago. If you'd like a witnessed cremation, ask early, as it may mean a drive. A cat travels easily in a lined basket on the back seat, and some crematories will give you a time to arrive.
Hammond's population is around 75,712, the 9th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 19 miles (31 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hammond are based.
The closest communities we cover are Calumet City (3 miles), East Chicago (3 miles) and Lansing (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Hammond too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Local habits around cremation and burial
Cremation is chosen for about 56.5%[3] of people in Indiana, but plenty of households here have always buried their cats under a favorite tree. Both are loving choices. We'd only suggest choosing on purpose rather than by default: find out what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your cat, your home and your plans.
We take the Indiana rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Hammond, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for cat owners in Hammond
Snow and ice can delay collection, especially on rural roads. The upside is time: in an unheated room, garage or porch that stays near freezing, a cat can safely wait a day or two. Wrap your cat in a blanket, place them in a sturdy lidded box and make sure other pets and wildlife can't reach them.
If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself in winter, the cold car helps. Lay your cat in a lined box or carrier on the back seat and drive carefully. In January, when lows average about 20°F, check the roads before you set off, and don't feel you have to go that day if conditions are poor. Your cat will keep safely in the cold.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Most Hammond families pay somewhere in the ranges below. Private cremation for a pet up to 30 lb, which covers almost every cat, typically runs $100 to $175, and communal about $45 to $75[5]. If you'd like a vet to come to the house, cat euthanasia averages about $359 at home against $158 in a clinic[4], roughly 2.27x[6] the price.
Put another way: around 1,050 cats die in Hammond each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.2 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

Burial, ashes and the rules in Indiana
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes when a death came out of nowhere. A post-mortem is an option too, but only before the cremation, so raise it straight away if you want one.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. An emergency hospital's usual partner may differ from your own vet's, and you can name either or one you found yourself.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or ask the team to send the blanket with your cat.
Keeping your cat's memory close in Hammond
Many Hammond families keep ashes at home or place a small marker in the backyard. Wolf Lake, the lakefront parks and the Little Calumet River area are public spaces, and scattering there is something to ask the city or park authority about first. A garden bed, a windowsill urn or a clay paw print suits Hammond's smaller houses well and moves easily if you do.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Hammond actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 19 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hammond and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Indiana attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Indiana human cremation rate at about 56.5%[3]. We show it on the Hammond page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is Hammond big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 12,000 Hammond households keep a cat and around 1,050 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 75,712), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Does the Hammond climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?
Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.
Is it better to bury a barn cat or have them cremated?
Either is fine. Many families near Hammond bury farm and barn cats on their own land, deep enough that foxes or coyotes can't disturb the grave and away from wells and streams. Communal cremation through your vet is an affordable alternative, and a private cremation makes sense for a cat you were especially close to or would like to keep if you ever move.
