Stonecrest, Georgia
Who handles cat aftercare in Stonecrest
Many Stonecrest households own their homes and have fenced backyards, and some families have lost pets there before. Even so, a move, a sale or subdivision rules can make a backyard grave a poor fit, and most families here choose cremation. Before you commit, ask whether you will receive only your own pet's ashes, roughly how many days it takes, and if a lock of fur can be saved.
Stonecrest is one of DeKalb County's newest cities, incorporated in 2017 along Interstate 20 east of Atlanta, next to Lithonia. Neighborhoods of single-family homes built from the 1980s onward spread out from a big regional shopping district near the interstate, and Atlanta is about 15 miles west. Most addresses are quick to reach, but give your subdivision name and nearest cross street, since many streets here share similar names.
Home burial is common in smaller communities, and for a cat it's physically easy: a small grave in a garden you own. It's worth thinking about whether you'll stay in the property and whether foxes, coyotes or dogs are likely to dig; a cat's grave needs to be deep enough to discourage them. Some families choose cremation and bury the ashes instead, which avoids the problem and keeps the option of moving them later.
Stonecrest's population is around 61,337, the 16th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Stonecrest are based about 15 miles away in Atlanta, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Stonecrest sits within easy reach of Conyers (9 miles), Decatur (11 miles) and Stockbridge (12 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Stonecrest; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Why cremation is familiar in Georgia, or isn't
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Georgia, at about 54.2%[3], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll see both among cat owners. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, and a cat's small amount of ash makes cremation easy to live with. Neither is more proper than the other.
That Georgia rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Stonecrest only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, timing and your cat in Stonecrest
In the hottest months (June, July and August), outdoor cats go looking for shade under decks, in sheds and beneath parked cars, and a cat who is ill will often hide somewhere like that. If your cat hasn't come home in the heat, check the cool, dark places first. If you find them, use gloves and a towel, place them in a box and call your vet; there's no shame in needing help with this part.
Long, hot seasons like Stonecrest's bring more outdoor activity for cats and more traffic on warm evenings, and road losses are one of the hardest ways to lose a cat. If a neighbor or passer-by finds your cat, ask them to move your cat off the road onto a towel if they can, and bring a box and a blanket when you go. Your vet can check for a microchip if identity is uncertain, and then help with cremation.

Cat cremation prices for Stonecrest families
In the US, private cremation for a cat averages about $180[4], one of the lowest prices on any crematory's list because cats sit in the lightest weight band. What you pay in Stonecrest depends mostly on everything around the cremation: home collection, an after-hours call, a decorative urn or a paw print. The table shows typical national figures.
Put another way: around 860 cats die in Stonecrest each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.2 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

Rules worth knowing in Georgia
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Georgia before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
Georgia keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Stonecrest.
For Georgia's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Georgia guide. Local rules in Stonecrest can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email so they can keep your cat until you're back. With a call in advance, most practices around Stonecrest will take a cat brought in by a sitter.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. The clinic can keep them for several days if that's your wish; when you're a long way from home, a photograph taken by the vet may be a kinder option.
- Arrange the cremation remotely when coming home isn't possible yet. You can give instructions and pay over the phone, and the clinic will keep the ashes until you return.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.
Keeping your cat close
July afternoons in Stonecrest sit around 90F with muggy air, and January nights settle near freezing without often dropping below it. A pet who dies in the hot season needs cooling right away: an air-conditioned bedroom, a beach towel beneath them, a sealed ice pack against their belly. Arrange pickup that day. In winter the pressure eases, and you can wait for family to come home.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Atlanta to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Atlanta (roughly 15 miles from Stonecrest) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Stonecrest page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 54.2%[3] of Georgia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Stonecrest?
The closest communities we cover are Conyers (about 9 miles), Decatur (about 11 miles) and Stockbridge (about 12 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Stonecrest too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Stonecrest?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Stonecrest?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Stonecrest offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
Is pet cremation regulated in Georgia?
By one directory's count, only nine US states have laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[6], and as of 2026 just two require written documentation to be given to owners[7]. Whether or not Georgia is one of them, ask any provider how they identify your cat, whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, and for all of it in writing.
