How cat cremation works in Rome
Rome is the seat of Floyd County in northwest Georgia, about 58 miles from Atlanta, and it grew up where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers meet to form the Coosa. The town is known for its hills, its brick downtown along Broad Street and its colleges. Housing ranges from older frame houses on steep streets to rural homes out in the county. Tell any provider which side of the rivers you live on, since bridges shape the route.
Northwest Georgia gets long, sticky summers and real winter cold snaps, with frost common from December into February. If your cat, rabbit or other small companion dies during a warm spell, lower the temperature around them quickly: an air-conditioned room, a cotton sheet beneath, and cold packs swaddled in dish towels at their sides. In a cold month, an unheated room works for a few hours while you make calls.
Barn cats and farm cats are part of life around Rome, and many families care for several at once. When one dies, a quiet burial on the land is the usual choice, and a perfectly good one. If a particular cat was closer to you than the others, though, a private cremation lets you keep them, and communal cremation through your vet is an affordable option for cats you fed but never handled.
Rome is home to about 38,934 people, the 30th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Atlanta, about 58 miles (93 km) away, which is where some providers serving Rome are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Calhoun (22 miles), Cartersville (23 miles) and Acworth (32 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
6,050
How many cat-owning households Rome has (estimate)
How we calculated this
38,934 ÷ 2.5 = 15,574 households; × 39% (cat) = 6,050. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
540
Estimated cat losses in Rome each year
How we calculated this
6,050 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 540 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
39%[1]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
54.2%[3]
The NFDA projected Georgia's cremation rate at 54.2% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

The local attitude to cremation
In a place like Georgia, with a human cremation rate near 54.2%[3] and burial still common, pet cemeteries often sit alongside crematories. Some let you bury a cat's ashes in a small plot or niche rather than a full grave, which costs far less and gives you somewhere to visit. Ask local providers whether they offer this if a grave matters to you but a garden burial doesn't suit.
We take the Georgia rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Rome, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for cat owners in Rome
Seasonal weather also shapes what happens afterwards. Scattering in wind or burying ashes in wet or frozen soil is harder than it sounds, so many families in Rome keep the urn at home for a while and choose a calm, dry day for any outdoor memorial. There's no time limit on ashes.

How much to budget for your cat
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[5], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[6]. In Rome, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
By our estimate Rome families would spend around $0.1 million a year if every one of the roughly 540 cats lost here were privately cremated at clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], the national average. Competition for that work is real, so quotes differ.

What Georgia allows: burial, scattering and more
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in Georgia mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.
Georgia keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Rome.
For Georgia's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Georgia guide. Local rules in Rome can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory covering Rome. Let them know where your cat is now and whether you're able to drive them over.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
The rivers are central to how Rome sees itself, and the riverwalk trails that follow them are where many residents spent evenings with their animals. Scattering along public riverbanks is up to the city or whoever owns the land, so ask before you go. Many Floyd County families simply bring the urn home instead and plant a native shrub where a pet liked to doze in the afternoon sun.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Rome?
The closest communities we cover are Calhoun (about 22 miles), Cartersville (about 23 miles) and Acworth (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rome too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Georgia?
For people, yes: about 54.2%[3] of Georgia deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rome follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many cat owners live in Rome?
By our estimate, about 6,050 households in Rome have at least one cat, and around 540 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 38,934, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Rome actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Atlanta, about 58 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Rome and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Do crematories charge extra to collect from a rural address near Rome?
Some do. Many include collection within a set distance and charge per mile beyond it, or add a flat fee for remote or out-of-hours trips, and for a cat that fee can exceed the cremation itself. Ask for the collection price separately. Driving your cat to your vet or the crematory in a carrier is the easiest way to avoid it.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[8], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[7], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[9]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
