The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is the norm in Florida: about 72.5%[3] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity carries over to pets. Most cat owners here already know what a private cremation is, local providers are well established and nobody will think twice about a small urn on a bookshelf. With a cat, that urn can be tiny, which suits apartments and busy shelves alike.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, collection and burial in Ocala
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), outdoor cats go looking for shade under decks, in sheds and beneath parked cars, and a cat who is ill will often hide somewhere like that. If your cat hasn't come home in the heat, check the cool, dark places first. If you find them, use gloves and a towel, place them in a box and call your vet; there's no shame in needing help with this part.
Don't leave your cat in a car or on a porch in Ocala's summer heat, even for a short while. If you're driving your cat to the vet or crematory yourself, cool the car first, put your cat in a carrier or lined box on the floor behind a seat, out of the sun, and go straight there. Most clinics will meet you at the door if you call ahead.

The first 48 hours, step by step
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
