Cat aftercare in Dunedin: the local picture
Dunedin sits on St. Joseph Sound in northern Pinellas County, about 20 miles from St. Petersburg, with a walkable downtown, a Scottish heritage and the Pinellas Trail running right through the middle of town. Homes range from older cottages near the water to condos and 1960s ranch houses. Aftercare providers serving Pinellas reach Dunedin easily, and a home collection is usually simple once they know where to park.
Dunedin families often connect their pets to the waterfront, the trail or the view of Caladesi and Honeymoon Islands at sunset. Scattering a little ash along the sound can feel right, but check the rules for parks and beaches first. Plenty of people keep most ashes at home and plant something hardy in the garden, like a Simpson's stopper or a native coontie, as a living marker.
Word travels in a place like Dunedin. You may find neighbors asking after your cat, the vet sending a card or someone at the feed store remembering the cat who sat on your porch. Let people help if you can. If your cat went missing and was found on a road, a neighbor may be the one who tells you; it's a hard way to learn, and it's fine to ask them to help you bring your cat home.
Dunedin is home to about 35,227 people, the 83rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. St. Petersburg, roughly 21 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Dunedin run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Clearwater (5 miles, a larger centre), Tarpon Springs (8 miles) and Largo (9 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
5,500
Dunedin: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
35,227 ÷ 2.5 = 14,091 households; × 39% (cat) = 5,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
490
Dunedin families who lose a cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
5,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 490 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
39%[1]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[2]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
72.5%[3]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

The local attitude to cremation
Florida is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 72.5%[3] for people, and for most cat owners it will feel like the natural choice too. Still, give it a moment's thought. Would you like to keep the ashes, scatter them in the garden your cat watched from the window, or bury them under a plant? The answer decides whether you need a decorative urn now or a simple sealed container until you're ready.

What the seasons mean for cat owners in Dunedin
Dunedin summers are hot: August averages highs around 91°F. Heat shortens the time you have after a cat dies at home, so move your cat to the coolest room, lay them on a towel in a box or basket and keep the air conditioning running. A small body is easy to keep cool with two or three wrapped ice packs alongside it, not underneath. Ask for same-day or next-morning collection.
Summer storms around Dunedin can close roads and knock out power. If collection is delayed and the air conditioning is off, keep your cat in the lowest, darkest room, wrapped in a sheet inside a box, with frozen water bottles around them, and swap them as they melt. A cat's small size makes this manageable at home for longer than you might think. Call the provider to agree a new time rather than waiting for them.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Dunedin providers charge today. Use the table to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the container.
Multiply it out: roughly 490 cats a year in Dunedin (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.
The Florida price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial and scattering rules for Florida
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Florida allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Dunedin.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Dunedin's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (after hours, an emergency clinic will do) and describe what has happened. If you have any doubt, they can confirm your cat has died, and they'll tell you how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Dunedin's August days reach the low 90s with thick humidity, and winters are mild enough that frost is rare. If your pet dies in the warm months, choose a cool, air-conditioned room on a towel, add a couple of wrapped ice packs, and aim for collection within the day. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in off the Gulf quickly in summer, so leave a little slack in pickup times.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many cats die in Dunedin each year?
Our estimate is around 490. It comes from Dunedin's population (about 35,227), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 5,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Will I have to travel to St. Petersburg to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Petersburg (roughly 21 miles from Dunedin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[3] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dunedin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dunedin?
Usually yes. Clearwater is about 5 miles away, Tarpon Springs is about 8 miles away and Largo is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?
Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[7], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[8], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[9]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
