Cremation in Florida, and what it means for cat owners
In Florida, about 72.5%[3] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Cocoa tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather, timing and your cat in Cocoa
Long, hot seasons like Cocoa's bring more outdoor activity for cats and more traffic on warm evenings, and road losses are one of the hardest ways to lose a cat. If a neighbor or passer-by finds your cat, ask them to move your cat off the road onto a towel if they can, and bring a box and a blanket when you go. Your vet can check for a microchip if identity is uncertain, and then help with cremation.

Local rules in Florida
A cat's ashes are treated very differently from a body: in most places you can keep them, move them between homes or across borders, or carry them on a plane if the container can be screened and the airline agrees. It helps to keep the crematory's certificate with the urn. Local rules bite on two things instead, a body in the ground and ashes on public land, and they're summarized for Florida below.

A simple checklist for the next two days
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.

Does the Cocoa climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 40 miles from Cocoa) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Roughly how many cats die in Cocoa each year?
Our estimate is around 280. It comes from Cocoa's population (about 19,777), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 3,100 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cocoa?
Usually yes. Rockledge is about 5 miles away, Merritt Island is about 7 miles away and Cape Canaveral is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
My local vet in Cocoa is small. Can they still arrange cremation?
Almost certainly. Small practices usually work with a crematory in a larger centre and have a regular collection day, and your cat is kept in a cold room at the clinic until then. Ask which crematory they use, whether private cremation is available, what it costs for a cat and roughly how long the ashes take to come back.
