When your cat dies in Georgetown: what happens next
By our estimate, about 1,300 households in Georgetown share their home with a cat, and roughly 120 cats are lost there each year. You're not alone in this, and you don't have to sort it out by yourself.

Georgetown, Delaware
Getting help for your cat in Georgetown
Georgetown is home to many working families, including a large Guatemalan and wider Latino community, and households differ in how they prefer to handle a pet's body. Some bury on their own land; others prefer cremation. If you rent, check with your landlord before digging. A private cremation with the ashes returned is portable, while communal cremation costs less. Ask whether a Spanish-speaking contact is available if that helps.
Summer in Georgetown is long and hot, with August afternoons around 88F and thick humidity, and freezing nights come mostly between December and February. Being well inland, the town escapes the worst coastal surge, yet heavy tropical rain still arrives some Septembers. After a pet dies in that heat, a shaded interior room with the blinds drawn is the place to rest them while the family decides.
Many vets around Georgetown run mixed practices, caring for cattle, horses and dogs as well as cats, and in calving or lambing season they can be out on farms for long stretches. They still arrange cat cremation routinely. Call ahead so someone is at the clinic when you arrive, and if your vet is out on a call, ask the front desk to take the details and ring you back.
Georgetown's population is around 8,291, the 8th-largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Millsboro (8 miles), Seaford (12 miles) and Milford (15 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How we calculated this
8,291 ÷ 2.5 = 3,316 households; × 39% (cat) = 1,300. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Why cremation is familiar in Delaware, or isn't
Human cremation sits at around 59.7%[3] in Delaware, and pet owners are split in a similar way. In one US survey of more than 2,000 dog and cat owners, 68% had chosen cremation for at least one past pet and 32% burial[5] (Cooney et al.). Many households had done both at different times. Your choice for this cat doesn't have to match the last one.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Delaware figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Georgetown tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How Georgetown's weather affects the first few hours
Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Georgetown is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.
Georgetown winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your cat in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation first and bury the ashes later.

Cat cremation prices for Georgetown families
Where you live in the US moves the price. Pet care spending in the Seattle metro ran more than 30% above the national average in early 2025[6], while San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta sat below it[7]. In Georgetown, use the table as a guide, then ask local providers for an itemized total rather than relying on a national average.
By our math, Georgetown loses roughly 120 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

Local rules in Delaware
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Delaware allows for burial and scattering.

What to do when your cat dies in Georgetown
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email so they can keep your cat until you're back. With a call in advance, most practices around Georgetown will take a cat brought in by a sitter.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. If you do, the clinic can hold them for a few days; if the trip home is long, a photo from the vet can be a gentle substitute.
- Arrange the cremation remotely when coming home isn't possible yet. You can give instructions and pay over the phone, and the clinic will keep the ashes until you return.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. Older cats sometimes decline fast, and a sitter who called for help did the right thing.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Georgetown is the Sussex County seat, a small inland town laid out around The Circle, where the courthouse and county offices sit, roughly sixteen miles from the beaches at Lewes and Rehoboth. Homes range from older frame houses near the center to newer subdivisions and rural lots on the roads out toward Redden and Millsboro. When you call about collection, say whether you are inside town limits or out on a county road, and give a landmark.

Questions people ask
How does Georgetown's weather affect cat aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Georgetown, with average highs around 88°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Georgetown?
Usually yes. Millsboro is about 8 miles away, Seaford is about 12 miles away and Milford is about 15 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Georgetown big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 1,300 Georgetown households keep a cat and around 120 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 8,291), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How do Delaware attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Delaware human cremation rate at about 59.7%[3]. We show it on the Georgetown page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Georgetown?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
Does pet insurance pay for cat cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[9]. Some add-ons help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[10], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[11]. Either would cover a typical private cat cremation. Check your policy before you pay a provider in Georgetown.
