Fountain, Colorado
Cat cremation in Fountain: how it usually works
Fountain is an El Paso County city of about 29,000 on Interstate 25, roughly 12 miles south of downtown Colorado Springs and right beside Fort Carson. Many households are military families, and most housing is in newer subdivisions, with older homes around the original town center. If you want a home collection, share the neighborhood name and the closest main road, because some newer streets are still missing from map apps.
Fountain Creek runs through town, and the regional park and nature center along it are favorite outdoor spots, with Pikes Peak filling the view on clear days. For many households, those stretches of creek hold years of memories. Some families set the urn on a bookshelf; others bury it in the yard beneath a young tree. With so many families here expecting to move, keeping ashes portable is often the practical first step.
If the crematory serving Fountain only collects from your vet once a week, you may need to keep your cat at home for a few days. Wrapped in a towel, then sealed in a strong plastic bag, a cat keeps well in a chest freezer, and your vet may offer theirs. It sounds hard, but it's common practice in rural areas and doesn't affect cremation or any keepsakes you'd like.
Fountain's population is around 29,450, the 28th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Colorado Springs, roughly 12 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Fountain run from there.
Our pages for Colorado Springs (13 miles, a larger centre), Pueblo (29 miles, a larger centre) and Castle Rock (48 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Fountain as well.
Our estimate
4,600
How many cat-owning households Fountain has (estimate)
How we calculated this
29,450 ÷ 2.5 = 11,780 households; × 39% (cat) = 4,600. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
4,600 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 410 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local habits around cremation and burial
Local habits show up in small ways. Where about 77.4%[3] of people are cremated, as in Colorado, relatives are more likely to keep an urn themselves and less likely to question yours. Some owners keep a cat's ashes so they can one day be placed with a person, or scattered together with another cat from the same home. If that's something you'd like, keep the ashes sealed and labelled, and check the rules for any cemetery you have in mind.
That Colorado rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Fountain only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, timing and your cat in Fountain
Indoor cats who spend winter pressed against radiators and sunny windows can hide a slow decline for weeks. If an older cat in Fountain is sleeping more, eating less or losing weight through January, February, March, November and December, mention it to your vet. And if you plan a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door.
With average lows at or below freezing for about 5 months a year, Fountain has a long stretch when the ground is too hard to dig, and frost can heave a shallow grave. A cat's grave needs to be deep enough to keep foxes and other animals away, which is hard work in frozen soil. Cremating now and burying the ashes later means a much smaller hole, almost anywhere you like, once the ground softens.

How much to budget for your cat
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.
By our math, Fountain loses roughly 410 cats a year. At the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4], that's a market of about $0.1 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

What's allowed in Colorado after your cat dies
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Colorado allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

We keep Colorado's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Colorado rules summary. Before a home burial in Fountain, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you weren't there. Most hospitals will bring your cat to a quiet room wrapped in a blanket, and many owners say it helped more than they expected.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. An emergency hospital's usual partner may differ from your own vet's, and you can name either or one you found yourself.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or ask the team to send the blanket with your cat.
Keeping your cat close
Fountain's climate is semi-arid, with July highs in the high 80s, January nights in the teens and gusty spring winds that carry dust across the plains. After a summer death, bring your pet inside onto a hard floor away from sunny windows as soon as you can. Winter storms here usually blow through within a day, so waiting for plowed roads before any drive makes sense.

Questions people ask
How do Colorado attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Colorado human cremation rate at about 77.4%[3]. We show it on the Fountain page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many cats die in Fountain each year?
Our estimate is around 410. It comes from Fountain's population (about 29,450), the average household size, the share of homes with a cat (about 4,600 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Fountain?
Usually yes. Colorado Springs is about 13 miles away, Pueblo is about 29 miles away and Castle Rock is about 48 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Colorado Springs to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Colorado Springs (roughly 12 miles from Fountain) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Colorado?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Colorado, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
