How cat cremation works in Commerce City
Commerce City's summers are hot and dry, reaching about 90 in July, and the open plains here catch strong wind and the occasional severe thunderstorm. Frost arrives by November and lingers into March. On a scorching afternoon, bring your pet inside straight away and rest them on a hard floor in a shaded room, with a fan running and curtains drawn. In winter, an unheated garage is often cold enough on its own.
Commerce City is an Adams County city of about 72,000 just northeast of Denver, with older neighborhoods and industrial areas in the south and fast-growing subdivisions in the north near E-470. Aurora is about 11 miles away and Denver even closer. For aftercare, say whether you are in the historic core near the rail yards or in a newer area farther north, since travel times differ considerably.
Word travels in a place like Commerce City. You may find neighbors asking after your cat, the vet sending a card or someone at the feed store remembering the cat who sat on your porch. Let people help if you can. If your cat went missing and was found on a road, a neighbor may be the one who tells you; it's a hard way to learn, and it's fine to ask them to help you bring your cat home.
About 72,345 people live in Commerce City, which makes it the 17th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Aurora, about 11 miles (17 km) away, which is where some providers serving Commerce City are based.
Our pages for Brighton (6 miles), Thornton (9 miles, a larger centre) and Northglenn (10 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Commerce City as well.
Our estimate
11,500
Commerce City: cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
72,345 ÷ 2.5 = 28,938 households; × 39% (cat) = 11,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
11,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,000 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is the norm in Colorado: about 77.4%[3] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity carries over to pets. Most cat owners here already know what a private cremation is, local providers are well established and nobody will think twice about a small urn on a bookshelf. With a cat, that urn can be tiny, which suits apartments and busy shelves alike.
We take the Colorado rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Commerce City, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Commerce City weather and timing
Some families in cold places cremate first and bury the ashes once the ground thaws. It's a lovely compromise for a cat: the small urn comes home now, and in spring you plant it under a shrub, a patch of catnip or the tree your cat used to watch the birds from.
If your cat died outdoors during Commerce City's cold spell and wasn't found for a while, they may be stiff or frozen. Don't try to warm or straighten them. Lay them on a blanket in a box, keep them in a cold garage or porch, and tell the vet or crematory what happened. They see this every winter and will know what to do, and you can still choose private cremation with the ashes returned.

Cat cremation prices for Commerce City families
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons: one paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6], which would cover a typical private cat cremation. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a cat averages about $566[4], roughly three times the cost of cremation.
Multiply it out: roughly 1,000 cats a year in Commerce City (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[4] is about $0.2 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

Burial and scattering rules for Colorado
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Colorado allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

For Colorado's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Colorado guide. Local rules in Commerce City can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
- Take anything you want to keep now: snip a little chest fur, or some from inside a hind leg, gather any whiskers that have dropped in their bed, and set the collar or tag aside.
- Place your cat in a box or basket lined with their own blanket, in the coolest room, with the door closed so other pets can't disturb them.
- Call your vet (after hours, an emergency clinic will do) and describe what has happened. If you have any doubt, they can confirm your cat has died, and they'll tell you how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other detail, the cost most of all, follows from this one decision.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
- Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your cat, and leave the food bowls out until you feel ready to move them.
Keeping your cat close
The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, with its bison herd and prairie trails, sits right on Commerce City's edge and is a point of local pride. Families here often find comfort in wide open spaces like that after a loss. Some place an urn on a living-room shelf with a photo beside it; others make a small bed of flowers out back. The decision can wait weeks or months.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Colorado?
For people, yes: about 77.4%[3] of Colorado deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Commerce City follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Commerce City actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Aurora, about 11 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Commerce City and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How does Commerce City's weather affect cat aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Commerce City, with average highs around 90°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
How many cat owners live in Commerce City?
By our estimate, about 11,500 households in Commerce City have at least one cat, and around 1,000 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 72,345, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How many cats are there in Commerce City?
By our estimate, about 11,500 households in Commerce City have at least one cat, and around 1,000 cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national cat ownership and lifespan figures; the method is shown on this page. Many homes have more than one cat, so the true number of cats is higher.
Could antifreeze or a car engine have caused my outdoor cat's death?
It's possible in winter. Antifreeze tastes sweet to cats and is highly toxic, and cats sometimes shelter in engine bays for warmth. If an outdoor cat dies suddenly in cold weather, tell your vet what you know before cremation; they can advise whether an examination is worthwhile. Warning neighbors about spills can protect other cats.
