What's allowed in Alabama after your cat dies
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Alabama allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.

- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.

- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

Step by step in Alabama
- If your cat died while you were away, with a sitter, a neighbor or at a boarding cattery, phone the person who was caring for them first. Ask what happened and where your cat is right now.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email to hold your cat until you're home. Most clinics near Alabama will accept a cat from a sitter if you call ahead.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. The clinic can keep them for several days if that's your wish; when you're a long way from home, a photograph taken by the vet may be a kinder option.

Which US states regulate pet crematories?
One directory counts only nine states with pet-crematory-specific licensing or consumer laws: California, New York, Texas, Arizona, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland and Illinois[9]. Elsewhere, providers are mainly covered by general business and environmental rules. Wherever you are in Alabama, ask how your cat will be identified and get the type of cremation confirmed in writing.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Alabama?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules.
